There is a tuxedo-style white shirt that can be worn with the white dress uniform, the mess dress uniform, and the ASU if worn with a bowtie. There is also a "Party Shirt" option word for dining-in functions that get fairly crazy. Typically it can be worn with the ASU or Mess dress and doesn't look any different then the normal white shirt while the jacket is worn. However, once the jacket is removed, the sleeves and/or back have any number of logos, designs, sequins or other decorations.

Thanks Chief! I'm getting married Saturday. I'm going to wear my ASUs and cav hat. I was told that you can wear a civilian white shirt for formal functions. I spent last evening scouring DA PAM 670-1. In this context, would a civilian white long-sleeve shirt be authorized? I can't seem to find the documentation in either direction.

I got married in my ASUs, bowtie, and Cav Hat last February. If you keep your top on, there is no issue. Since you are at your own wedding, it probably won't matter then either unless you invite someone who is in your chain of command that might try to play uniform Nazi at your own wedding. I wore my ASU to the reception just to get some pictures and do the cake cutting with my saber, but then promptly changed into proper country dancing attire.

To be ‘well dressed’ if you are wearing are wearing a bow tie, the shirt should have studs rather than buttons. That is the shirt I wear with my tuxedo. SFC (Join to see)

CSM Charles Hayden, I’m almost positive that shirts requiring studs are not authorized for dress blues/ASUs, even with a bow tie. Studs are only authorized for the blue and white mess uniforms and the blue and white evening mess uniforms.
There was a time when plain gold cuff links were authorized with dress blues for evening wear, but even then, the shirt front required buttons, not studs. I don’t know if that’s still allowed or not, but I didn’t see it addressed in AR 670-1.
