Americans believe that the U.S. Army is the most important service branch to national defense, followed closely by the Air Force. Fewer than one in five choose the Marine Corps or the Navy. The Army has edged out other military branches in Gallup surveys conducted throughout the last decade.

MAJ (Join to see) - Why would the range over land be any different than at sea. They sure do a lot of alpha strikes for not having any range

I do know the Navy has to split its budget with the Marines and the Marines for the most part get where they are going via the Navy and if they directly getting the ride so to speak the Navy foots the bill. I thought by your comment saying they "belong to the Navy Not!" Isn't technically correct I noticed you didn't correct the GySgt who said they belong to the Navy and I'm guessing he probably has a pretty good idea how it works. I think the Marines that go to Annapolis and the ones who go through Naval Flight training might believe the Navy also pays their bills. In WW2 Admiral Chester Nimitz was the commander of all land air and sea troops in Central Asia so I'm not so sure about Marines serving side by side their have been times they were under the Navy. I'm sure with the restructuring now they both have their concise rolls but if the Secnav tells the Commandsnt that an Admiral is leading an operation I'm fairly sure that's the way it goes. Just like on our carrier if the Mardet was on the ship and the Captain of the ship or the task force commander wanted them to do something I think they were obligated to follow their orders. I don't know it seems to have worked for both of them for a couple of hundred years. I liked having the Marines on our ship the weapons drills sucked when I think they enjoyed knocking us squids out of the way in the passages but foreign nationals didn't screw with you when the Marines were around on liberty

The Army has more ships than the Navy and more Aircraft than the Air Force plus we do more with less than anyone.

You Navy guys invented the Marine Corps because Sailors don't like to march. That's what I've been told. :-)

Ha! Civilian opinion of which branch is most important. It's like saying "What organ would you be most willing to loose, heart, lungs, brain, stomach or skin?"

I'm partial to the Army because that is where I served.

If I had to do it over I'd go Air Force because they have better food and barracks (not to mention they have some really awesome "toys").

There's no denying the impact of a Navy CAG parked off your coast, or the impact of a few SEALS dropped anywhere on the globe.

Nothing strikes more terror to our foes, or brings more comfort to our friends than "The marines are landing now."

The Coast Guard are really the unsung heros... helping people on one hand, taking fire in peacetime on the other.

You are all my brothers, and I don't care what the uninformed masses think!

I agree with you on this! We are all on the same fight and have an important part to play. A discussion like this should never be brought up with civilians; even service members and veterans will say what you said if asked the same question. We may poke fun at each other, but that's the fun of it: we are brothers in the same family, but as soon someone out side the family - civilians who have never served - want to have a say, I think we all agree that every branch is equally as important, and completing the mission and being ready to do so is the only concern.

Don't a large number of people think we are all in different branches of the army?

Haha...if that were the case, the USMC would be the Amphibious Assault division. From time to time I hear the Army folks mentioning "No Marines present at D-Day" ... forgetting that most Marines were sent to the Pacific Island Theater (because we can swim?).

If the branches ever truly merge, would all Army 11B people have to meet a Swim Qual, as part of a right of passage unto an MOS change to USMC 0311? Surely many could handle that just fine...but you know there would be those few...just as there are those few Marine Recruits who don't swim well either.

=)

A poll of the general public may be a sort of popularity contest, but it is certainly NOT indicative of the actual importance of the roles of the different services.

Most people have no clue what any of the services actually do and how important they are to our nation. If they did, there would be a completely different attitude toward the military in general. There would also be a mass exodus from DC as people would begin to oust current political figures who are hellbent on disabling our military and destroying our country.
