I was reading the new this morning when John McCain's name came up. He ran against Obama and in the article was only seven points behind. That doesn't sound like a lot, and might be close to the margin of error. So I ask: Do we really want a veteran as POTUS or are we blowing smoke unless we find our "kind" of veteran? Patton would've been an early Trump, except intelligent and knowledgeable.

You cause me to blow the dust off my two volume edition of "THE PATTON PAPERS" and leafing through them ... well I agree with you. Living just 10 miles from the "Patton Museum" on Fort Knox, I have seen the exhibits which underlies your observation. The trouble is the American political establishment is afraid of a Patton or a Trump because they could not control the man. In some ways I would even say they were at best happy that Patton die (at worst had a hand in his death) and may secretly wish the same for Trump. Ironically, Trump is almost the same age as Patton at his death.

Sir I use Patton as a Trump of his day due to the reasons you mentioned, but the major difference between them while Patton was hard and vain, he saw a purpose greater than himself. That ALONE separate's him from anything Trump could ever hope to be. Patton was dedicated to this nation, even with his faults. Not Trump. Trump when he came out with the whole he felt like he had more training than the military, I was dumbfounded. Even the lowest private has more than he does, and not at some prep sudo-military school. Patton had respect and demanded it. Trump has none for anyone else yet demands you be nice to him. This stunt along with others has me truly questioning his samity when this seems staged, and when they do the background on this vet, nothing lines up.

I like a very balanced and well rounded person. A veteran does not automatically give the candidate my vote. Someone with a career in military will definitely not get my vote as that may be all that they know. Someone with some military experience will get brownie points with me as that shows that you have some military experienced. It really depends on the situation.
I am more willing to vote for one who has a background in politics and law, and no military experience as opposed to a veteran who has served his whole life. (Again depends on the person, I am just making a generalization.)

Thanks for the response. Now you're willing to vote for someone who has a background in politics and law. THAT is the same generic "requirement" that has hurt us for the last 100 years plus. Looking at congress now, if the bar ever needed lawyers in any state, just raid congress. They're ALL there. Career politicians are another hindrance. Look at the leads from both parties. Only Ryan hasn't been in there forever, and I believe he's ONLY in his position due to his relative youth. The GOP is seen as an old mans party to some, and to get younger folks to buy in, they promote Ryan. Makes sense. It's the "requirement" we need to abolish and set term limits. How many blue collar worker are in congress? Don't use "family backgrounds" but actual blue collar workers. How many are Ivy league grads vs. common state universities? Most vets are blue collar Jane's and Joe's. Regardless if they E's or O's.Their education is the rear end of a M4 with the front at a target. Some DO have a degree, most of the Airmen I had were all grads of CoomCollegeUSAF (I forget the proper name). But it's the template that needs some heavy tweaking.

I think the biggest issues with choosing member's of congress with no background in law and politics is when in "power", they may have personal vs professional agenda. We can see that with Donald Trump compared to the rest of the candidates. I am for certain that other than Trump, whoever becomes president, things will more or less remain in the center left/right.
Politicians in my opinion only choose their stances based on the demographic they want their votes from, not from personal beliefs (except for maybe Bernie Sanders).
