$15 an hour wage, what does it do to recruiting, retention, the pay chart, and other areas of our lives?

So a PV1 under two years makes $1566.90/16= $9.79 for a 160 hr work month. Lets take $15x160 hr a month= $2400. Looking at the pay chart an E4 with 4 years is the earliest chance to get close is to make $2382 after four years.
Cuts in government spending and messing with the GI Bill, retirement, and other entitlements (BAH,TA, etc). We also don't work 160 hr/m & put our health at risk. Thoughts?

People who demand this $15/hr or higher for NO hard work or time in a job are lazy, cop outs. There will never be equality in jobs and pay for everyone. Every person is not smart enough, skilled enough, nor has the same work ethic. Wages and salary are paid to those with the time, skills, and experience put into a job. It's insulting to those, like myself and countless others who have worked very hard to get where we are.
Economy changes in good and bad ways. Simply giving free money is only going to ruin things for all. Soldiers, among our NECESSARY jobs for a country to function are HIGHLY underpaid. Police, firefighters, EMTs, nurses, and other various EMS services that never close. Where is their equal pay in regard to their job and risk? Hmmm? Exactly, too many selfish people wanting a handout for nothing. Probably milking govt assistant as long as they can get it.

Service to country not self. The service makes sure we all have access to food and shelter. If most service members choose to live well beyond their means, like most Americans, they need to be reminded that service does not mean that the govt will pay you extra to have a nicer car or fancy phone.

I get it from the get go we're taught and repeated on selfless selfless selfless. I'm happy that this is the message that echoes the hallways of marine and army infantryman barracks across the world. However can you find a career path that calls a common man into a greater roll for his country then that of military service? Service to this country is not mandated and not even eligible for millions in this nation that's 320 million +. We are the one percent and much less then that who remain for 20 years +. The DoD gets 598.49 Billion as part of discretionary spending. You can tell Soldiers are not the priority with cuts coming all around us and the every heavy and increasing GO population and figureheads in Washington are expecting us to sacrifice more because they can't figure it out. The private sector, if, goes to $15 an hour. What do you think will happen to the capability that is defined by the manpower of our forces?

employers need to pay more, automation and get rid off employees, why would i pay for a hamburger at 4$ when i can go to fully automated establishment and get 1$ cheaper, the flaw in your post is that businesses want your business, just because they can dosn't mean they will, and any company that follows your philosophy will close

I'm not saying keep the national minimum wage at 7.25, I'm asking what happens to the force if the pay goes to $15 an hour and the military stays with its current pay chart and 1.6% raises negative image in the media with PTSD, brain injuries, 22 vet suicides a day, and being in longest war of our history.

did you figure in health and dental, life insurance, if your single housing (barracks), food its the other benies that most dont account for, go to civi life, you pay for your food, you pay for your housing, you pay for all the other stuff mentioned above, if you go by you figures 15x 160 i dont make that in civi world, and i make 12.45/hr been with the company 10 years, i have to work over time, thats 6 days a week, on the 7th day its taking care of my house and property, you signed the papers the inheriant danger exists, the long hours exist thats the millitary 24/7/365, health risks that there its also part of the job, sometimes unknowingly agent orange, camp lejeune drinking water, etc, ect, your in the millitary your health is at risk every time you leave the wire

I pay for food and I have to pay for a house... BAS gets a family of four a complete week's worth of square meals, probably not a protein at every serving and your having cereal and coffee for breakfast. BAS is about $82 a week, and most people go to the store about every week ($82) or bimonthly ($164) and they spend more then that...
BAH is good in San Antonio but the house you get isn't going to be in a nice neighborhood for the rental prices. Nice apartment but pull your utilities out of your pay.
The "benies" are what confuses the issue. I'm talking dollar for dollar Military versus Civilian pay at $15 an hour. What does it do to recruiting and retention?
Do the benefits make up for it all?

Also, do you think anyone that works a job for four years is still going to make $15 an hour. Typically this pay would go up by a few dollars over 4 years. Most people could be a shift manager at (name your fast food restaurant) and probably make 17-22 an hour.
Hiring and training of new employees is typically a businesses' biggest employee expense.

As a former Army recruiter and counselor, monthly pay is hardly ever a buying motive or factor in making the decision to join. Neither was college money or bonuses. They were "nice to haves", but were add-on incentives that came with certain jobs the Army was pushing. Before that even came up, the person had to be interested in military service and committed to joining in the first place. Once that decision was made, then it was "what kind of bonus can I get?". We were "supposed" to go over the pay chart with everyone in the initial interview, but again, people don't have an interest in military service because of the pay. I think you could triple the E1 pay and it wouldn't make any difference in increasing the propensity to enlist.

I think that works for the 17-20 year crowd, what is typically the target. It seems the recruits now are always talking about money when they have a family. I had 26 new Soldiers as a PSG, in which over half we're older and had families. One had six kids with the same wife. Money was his number one issue but they made it on an E4 with <2 yrs wages. He said home cooking and hand-me down clothes, and a credit card keep him from being broke.
I also had a SM that just divorced with two kids. He couldn't keep his head above water any month with the payments going to them.

I agree that older married applicants with kids are definitely more interested in pay and benefits, but they are generally the walk-ins and few and far between. High school seniors and last 2 years grads are the target market, and their interest level in making the commitment to join is not really impacted much by the pay chart. New Soldier with 6 kids? more than 2 requires a dependency waiver to enlist. That is strange.

SFC (Join to see) - There has been a shift in recent years in demographics of new recruits. More older and married people are joining compared to years past. 17-20 is still the majority, but the gap has closed. I also think they have a higher IET/ first term attrition rate if I am not mistaken.

Yeah older guys are getting in and asking the ones I know it's because of the civilian market jobs are not there and health care concerns. They like the benefits but don't always like the conditions of work. I was a PSG at 28 and had 3 new Soldiers that were all over 40. One was a business owner previously; I was honest with them and said my only job is to train you, get you there, and get you back. That I was not there to run their life and tell them how to spend their money. They liked that and I had no problems out of them. I didn't always see that from the other PSGs I was around. The younger single guys were always a little different.

1. It forces a small amount of inflation as the costs associated goods or services go up. That $3 burger might now cost an extra quarter to make, and most of that cost will likely be passed on to the consumer.
2. The number of people who qualify for benefits such as food stamps will drop significantly. Today millions of workers are able to work full time and qualify for extensive state and Federal benefits. At $15 an hour, working people will be relying on their employers instead of taxpayers to make ends meet.
3. Working people will have some extra money to spend, which will help the economy.
4. Wages for low skilled workers will eventually rise as employers struggle to attract workers who can make $15 stocking shelves or flipping burgers.
5. A family with two adults working will earn at least 62K a year, which means they will likely also begin paying Federal Income taxes.
6. Higher income means increased Social Security tax which means the Social Security program will last longer.
7. We will see more automation as employers conduct technological upgrades to their businesses. Instead of lots of unskilled positions there will be a few skilled positions available servicing bad maintaining equipment.

SFC (Join to see) - It doesn't work like that prices are basically driven by three factors: 1. How much is the consumer willing/able to pay. 2. How much your competitors are charging for that good or service. 3. How much it costs to provide that good or service.
If a business knows it can get $4 for a product, it's likely already charging $4 for that product. If competitor prices all go up 5-10% , then your customers may be willing to also pay more since less expensive alternatives no longer exist. The important thing to remember is that the market that sets prices, the cost of production is merely the minimum a business can charge without losing money.

That business charging $4 for a burger understands that and they know how the market analysis will work if everyone makes $15 an hour.
I have a friend that owns a lot of real estate and said if it goes to $15 an hour, he's going to go up on his homes' rent and sale. He said the money will be there, so he'll go up and reengage the market over the next 3-4 years to settle out.
People aren't going to pay off debt, people aren't going to start cooking more at home, school enrollments might go up some, and i really don't see it creating more jobs or getting people off of social programs. It will support illegals working jobs more for people and a lot of pay under the table. I think the unemployment rate will go up and job creation down in a demographic of an ever growing population count and the mounting social issues will continue.

By 2009, the current POTUS said, he would have the national minimum wage to 9.50 and its not moved since it was established at from 6.55 to 7.25 some years ago (2007). A jump is going to kill employment and devalue our currency to the rest of the world, as nothing is truly backing it. I see inflation happening and social reform for social programs. It's not going to create a paradigm that will magically put people to work and drive the economy, as the Bush package didnt drive it either.

SFC (Join to see) - If rent and home values start climbing that means the net worth of the middle class will grow. I had a house in Arizona more than double in value during the early 200's. I spent 30K on it before the market crashed and it went down to what it was plus the money I put into it. Increasing home values drove economic growth for almost a decade before that house of cards fell down.
The people who will be hurt by a $15 an hour wage are those making $15 or a little more than that already, since there will be some inflation and it will take time for their wages to adjust to the new reality.
