Anyone have any pointers on changing careers without going to school first? I went to school for the job I have but its not panning out as I thought it would, been in it for about 4 years now.

I was an Avionics Tech when active. When I got out, I did the exact same thing. After becoming a supervisor, I found my passion building a management system on the computers provided our mod team. I started buying books and learning more about computers hardware and software. When I decided to take the career leap, I moved back to Texas and got my first job in the IT industry at Dell starting at $20 an hour. I'm now developing at a company that was recently listed in the S&P 500.

My advice is find your passion, learn as much as you can, start small and grow. Be patient, it's not going to happen over night.

Currently Im doing HVAC work with a local grocery store. I did a year and a half school for this field. Ive been laid off from 3 of the jobs Ive had due to season change and lack of work. Now granted this grocery store won't lay me off just because its fall or winter, I think id like to be more of an office job or something that doesn't have me investing in stocks of sun block.

Corporal, Need to know more. WHat are you doing and what is it you want to be different. If you are more specific, then it might be easier to get some answers. let;s see what is going on first - school, job, etc.

There have been a few times I have just wanted to walk awaym but then could not figure out why or what was going to be better. Can you articulate any thoughts about that?
