I have been in the Army going on 9 years in September. I have been stationed in Korea, West Point and Ft. Richardson. This is going to be a shock and awe for me going to a big Army post.

Currently I am a 25U3P with 1/501st ABN IN. I already have a connection with 2-38th CAV and plan on staying airborne upon arrival.

Just a few things to make sure I don't get over my head. Coming from an installation where there is only one BCT. Things seem more controlled.

Want to know what the transition from a small garrison installation to big Army post is like?

How is the local population toward military personal?

While stationed at Fort Hood, I really never left the base other than to go to the lake or eat out. The sheer size and things to do there were phenomenal. There are a myriad of commissaries, PX's and things to do there. I think my wife left the base twice while I was deployed. It took me more than 30 minutes to drive to WORK on the base! Lived in Commanche III and worked at HOOD AAF. This of course while 4th ID was there and the base sported two Divisions and a Corps!

Every unit & installation is different than another. I am sure you and your family will find many things you like on and off post and many things you don't like. You have to run with the positives, and remember that you can be miserable anywhere....but also remember that you might be there for a while based on stabilizing our force.

If, for some reason, you absolutely cannot stand the place, you still have options to volunteer for special duties (e.g. Drill Sergeant/Recruiter duties) - while its best to volunteer for those special duties based on the need for a challenge instead of a PCS.

The immediately surrounding communities of Fort Hood (Killeen, Copperas Cove) are primarily military communities which support the installation and are supported by the Soldiers, Civilians and contractors stationed at Fort Hood.

Something to look forward to, if you are not a member of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club, that is where the club originated and you will have a unique opportunity to challenge yourself for entrance into the club while there as well. Stay positive and stay hungry, you will do fine.

Thank you CSM Uhlig for the response.

Every goal I set when I came to 4/25 I have achieved or went above and beyond. Being a reclass I was unsure of what to expect. And now being that this is my first big Army installation I am kind of timid and nervous. More or less can I follow up my NCOERs and what is the OPTEMPO like at the unit I'll be placed in. I have a 1,000,000 burning questions that I know won't be answered until I arrive there and experience it myself.
