So I was surprised to find out that Vets and National Guard can move into on post housing. I looked for a reasonably priced rental in good condition in Shreveport/Bossier area. Wife found it on Barksdale AFB. As of today, I will be living in a gated community with it's own Armed Security Force. Best part no home owner association.

Found this which may be interesting ..... The Department of Defense says it doesn't know how many bases offer something similar because almost all military housing is managed by private contractors such as Picerne. Companies with vacant homes on their hands are allowed to rent them at market rates to tenants who aren't military families — giving priority according to a list that starts with single soldiers and ends with the general public — but they don't have to report back with statistics.

Picerne also rents homes to federal workers and military retirees at Fort Meade, but not as many homes as the 254 rented to those groups at APG, reflecting the shifting nature of the Harford base over the decades.

• Are only Active Duty allowed to live in housing? Check out our answer!!

The answer is NO--Single/Unaccompanied Military Members, National Guard and Reserves, Military Retirees, Federal Civil Service Employees, Retired Civil Service Employees and permanent employees of DoD Contractors and families are now eligible to reside in privatized housing on Hanscom AFB!!!

So I'm guessing that depending on the post/base it is possible.

I would be very interested in this program. Can you provide me with a site or POC so I can get more information on the program. I would love to be back around the military.

The POC varies by location. As does availability of housing. The POC is the installation's on post housing office. The priority is for Active Service Members; so if housing is largely available because a majority of Active Duty members are electing to live off post, then you may request to be considered. A credit check and background check of all occupants was required at the installation I am living on.

That is really great. I had no idea that those were offered to Vets and NG. Good deal.

It is especially since they need to fill the housing and Airmen at Barksdale AFB are mostly electing to live off base. I talked to a Security Force Airmen when I was processing to move on post and he was glad. When the housing is occupied there is less pressure on them to move on post.
