The flag if you see, the music if you don't.

I cannot bring myself to render a hand salute in civilian clothes and especially without a cover on the gourd. Marines never salute uncovered and we don't salute in civilian clothing. I know there was some sort of edict put out that "authorized" veterans to salute in civilian attire, I just cannot do it. I do put the hand over the heart and assume the potion of attention.

But I do stand at attention and try and face in the direction of the flag.

Yes, veterans in uniform should salute at the National Anthem or during Taps at military funerals and memorial services. Veterans not in uniform may also render a hand salute during Taps, but are also permitted to place their hand over their heart as a sign of respect. Civilians should place their right hand over their heart during the playing of the National Anthem and Taps.

Not with a military salute. I put my hand over my heart but haven't done this in some time since I don't work on post anymore.
