Come on gentlemen! Why be so hard on this kind soul? He was just a mere lad of 23 when he went on his walkabout. Why, under the ACA, he would have still had three years of coverage under his parent's medical insurance had he not gone to find himself-both in the Army and in the Afghani wilderness.

In the grand scheme of things, I expect that his courts-martial will be national news every night and that the MSM will trot out the same old 'experts' who will tell us how 'poor Bowe' was just trying to bring bad leadership to light. Of course, they'll gloss over all the bad things and in the end, I bet our current administration is hoping our little buddy will get a general discharge and walk away fairly unscathed to justify the swap.

Me, I hope they throw the book at him and he spends the rest of his life living under a bridge, eating garbage to survive. Oh sorry! Is that too harsh? Okay, maybe he just spends his days under a bridge, sleeps at night in a homeless shelter where he can also get fed a meal a day.

There aren't words to explain how I feel about this fucker. He was in my Brigade, 4th BCT (Airborne), 25th ID (out of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson located right outside of Anchorage, AK) and my PLT was just one of many involved in that DUSTWUN. Two good friends of mine were wounded as an RPG blew up directly over their head about thirty meters away from the apex of my Squad (that's what started off the bad guys' "mad minute") during an ambush (worst I've ever been in, which occurred in a Province we had never been to, had no intel on, hell they didn't even tell us that the SOP for operating the TACSAT was different than what we used in our usual AO which resulted in NO comms for longer than I'd like to say). I can't recall exactly how long we were out there looking (it was quite a while) but it became pretty impossible to carry enough water or be properly re-supplied. I'd say most guys were carrying about 175 pounds total and humping ALL day in about 125-130 F. The re-supply issues were just because of the sheer amount of troops out doing the hands-across-Afghanistan for this cowardly/dumb-as-fuck POS. Anyways, so we resorted to just getting water from the local wells we would happen upon. Consequently four or five guys acquired dysentery and we were forced to hole up in some fucking man made batch of trees about 150 ft x 100 ft that was adjacent a main road until we could get our PLT a bird back to the closest FOB for MEDEVAC purposes (they put out that MEDEVACs were only taking those with risk of loss of limb, eyesight, or life because they needed all the air assets to look for this POS, oh yeah ALL of the air assets in the ENTIRE RC EAST were pulled for this which is obviously going to fuck up the OPTEMPO flow, but it was also like early/mid July, the MIDDLE of fighting season!) as well as a replacement Medic and a couple of trigger pullers to replace some of what we lost (I was in a D Co so our PLTs, or technically ATs, are small to begin with. Our medic has permanent scarring and damage to his kidneys from aforementioned dysentery. Both of my buddies that were hit by that RPG have TBI. From what I've seen the media only really talks about the five Paratroopers from 1-501 PIR (our sister Infantry Battalion, I was in 3-509 PIR) but I wonder how many other KIAs there were and how many others were wounded and how many of them have permanent wounds/injuries/illnesses, etc. from that whole ordeal. Everyone that was involved in that debacle as well as the families of those brave and selfless Servicemen/women who made the ultimate sacrifice (and just FYI the entire BDE knew the TRUTH about EXACTLY what had transpired regarding this POS' "dissapearance" and why we were involved in that whole ordeal to begin with) as well as the families of those wounded/sick/injured as a result, both direct and indirect, of this fucker's actions should be in the front of the public area, which will be standing-space only, where they plan to execute this fuck (sorry battle buds but that's only wishful thinking for now). I suggest castration and drawing and quartering on the National Mall. But hey maybe I'm being harsh...

SGT Gregory Lawritson - Leavenworth doesn't have "hard labor" like you or most would imagine anymore. The only labor done at Leavenworth (USDB or JRCF) is commercial type stuff (like woodworking, metalworking, etc.). From what I have heard from guards who worked at the USDB (I was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, 40th MP BN) the prisoners there have it pretty easy, and the only hassles they get are from other prisoners.

Sgt Steven Thomas - One cannot be pardoned for a crime one has not been convicted of. If the trial BEGINS in February, Obama will be out of office by then. No chance of a pardon then.

I think that one thing that may go against the prosecution of this individual is the former Soldier who was interviewed about the same time bergdahl was released was the fact that he called bergdahl a traitor, and a deserter on national tv.
Two things about that interview- 1. It was big time news around this area when it was released that bergdahl had been recovered from captivity, his hometown had set up a huge welcome home ceremony until the news broke about the interview, 2. Before a gag order was placed on the story for any military personnel, what kind of jury "of his peers" will have not known about the story.

After the story broke about bergdahl's desertion, the 6 Soldiers who were killed searching for him, and the fact that it wasn't the first time he had left his base to go into the ville. His hometown quietly took down all the banners, yellow ribbons and other things for a welcome home disappeared.
But it's a strange thing that his father was secretly learning Pashtu, and his father rarely spoke to any news, or even when they were in the White House with obama.

There are many more things that are still being kept under wraps most likely.
The fact that Trump has already made comments about how bergdahl should be shot as a deserter, or something to that effect, is going to be a problem as well.

We will just have to wait and see.

What does Pres O have to gain from a pardon? Nothing. What does he have to lose? Credibility that he has faith in the UCMJ and his military leaders to police up their own.
Who wants to go down in history as the CIC that had no faith in their military? (broad brush stroke but thats how it would be depicted)

CW5 (Join to see) - What would he have to gain? Sealing the record regarding those injured/killed in the search for him. Closing the chapter in trading 5 hardened terrorists for him. I see it as the President doubling down on his previous choices.

But he has nothing politically to actually gain for it. No more votes, no more bargaining with lawmakers (if he ever did)....too much backlash potential and bad press so it won't happen.
No politician does anything just based upon personal morals or ethics anymore. Too many people with opposing values and opinions for that to ever happen.
