I am sure if you meet all of the requirements and do well on the ISST, you will be fine. make sure you are working towards this every day, even if you feel like all you can do is wait to hear back. You should be studying and taking certs right now in the meantime. The 201st seems to have a few folks who have made it that way and you have some people near you who can help you offer more to the CND world.

It took a few weeks, but I finally got a response. My application has been APPROVED pending the results of the ISST, which I'm trying to take next week.

Great job, if you get to request school go for something soon; if 17C hits soon, there might not be a course for you to attend. Also, don't slow down, Google DoD 8570 and start knocking them out. I would recommend Sec+ or N+, if you have those, go for the CEH or hell CISSP while you wait.

Thank you. I'm trying to get all of this done ASAP. Right now I'm waiting on HRC to approve the reclass request. Then I was told I'm going to PCS to school. I have a few of those certs as well, but I obviously need more. To be honest, I would drop everything and go TDY to school on Monday if they would let me, lol.

I know that you said that it took a few weeks for a response on your packet, but can you be a little more specific? thanks!

There's been a lot of back and forth with it. Latest step is I sent my final acceptance letter to HRC through retention, and almost 2 weeks later they told me I need a 4187 requesting reclass signed by my BN CDR. Been a few days and I'm still waiting on that. If you're still at the packet level, email the guys on the AKO page and they're pretty good about getting back to you. If you think you have a complete packet, ask them to review it, or you can look me up in the GAL (I'm the only SSG Myrick II) and I'll look at it for you.

Does the IT/IA experience need to be from while you have been in the army or does prior experience count? also what do I need to be able to prove prior experience?

Thank you

Both will be fine. Anything off of DoD 8570 will help a lot. Primarily INFOSEC, but other computer science certs and experience helps too.

Will this eventually be open to civilian enlistment?

Also, will these soldiers fall under the command of Signal Officers?

So...amazing.

Speaking with recruiters....as any MOS eventually it will. For now they must fill from the top - down and that means choosing from the current (Army) population.

I am not sure what you mean by "command of Signal Officers"?.....I can only assume that means will they exclusive to Signal units. I can only say it depends on the situation because with the creation of the MOS: 25D the army took away one of the responsibilities of the MOS: 25B (COMSEC Custodian) which is an authorized position in every Brigade Combat Team S-6. Additionally the Army gave the go-ahead to start filling the newly created Cyber Protection Brigades (CPB) which will consist heavily of this MOS. So based on the situation the soldiers in the MOS 25D could easily fall under a Signal Officer or any other officer within chain of a BCT. However from what I understand, the Army plans to create a Cyber Branch (17 Series) in the future for MOS 25D and 35N to better control the assigning management of cyber personnel.

I guess my primary inquiry was to determine whether or not a new officer branch would be created or whether they would expand SIGO to include this branch.

Primarily, SIGOs learn associate level networking principles and theory. While networking is associated with ITSec, it is not a primary tenant of it. Security is its own field and requires at least some knowledge of network operation, it tends to be much more specialized into branches, such as: Pen Testing, Firewall Administration, Network DMZ, ITSec controls, etc.

So, you answered my question quite well - thank you. Sounds like Signal officers may initially take the ball, but eventually it will be passed onto the 17 series officers.

Thanks, SFC Kess.

How basic are the 30 IT questions within the ISST? I have a limited knowledge of IT so should I study any charts such as port numbers or security + test questions or are the IT questions super basic?

For the ASVAB, if I took it in 2002 will I have to take it again? I have met all the other requirements ( SEC+, C/EH,TS-SCI, Indef, GT/ST over 105) and would like to apply. If no issue with ASVAB, how long after packet submitted will you be notify on acceptance or rejection?

Thanks

- At least 4 years of experience in IA and IT. This experience will be verified
- IA Certification: Must hold a current certification under either IAT Level II or IAM Level I IAW
DoD 8570.01-M
- Qualifying Scores. A minimum score of 105 in aptitude areas GT and ST on Armed Services
Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests administered on and after 1 July 2004
- Possess a security clearance of TOP SECRET (TS) Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI)
- U.S. citizen
- Meet service remaining requirement per AR 614-200 (36 months)
- A physical demands rating of medium
- A physical profile of 212221
- Normal color vision

That's not MOS 25D, that was a different Cyber element and they are not longer accepting open applications. There is a way to get into it, but the process is a bit more discreet. If you know you have a strong computer science background then keep searching, else it might not be worth the time. Hope that helped :)

WO1 (Join to see) I have thought about it and looked into the packet. My plan was to get out after this enlistment and settle down somewhere but I may drop a warrant packet instead. I'm undecided on the issue. Thanks for the suggestion though.

SSG (Join to see) Sorry for not responding sooner. I just contacted them through the listings on the AKO page and got a fairly quick response. I didn't submit a packet, just asked what they wanted for IA experience and listed what I had (25P is not IA, it's telecomm).
