I'm retiring in a couple of months and I have a lot of uniforms and gear... I'll keep my mess dress, a pair of ABUs (ACUs) and my Service Dress (Class As) so I can attend retirements, dining outs, ceremonies, etc... But I don't need 10 pairs of ABUs, Boots, Blues pants and shirts, Coats, etc.. I was thinking about selling it off but I want to do it responsibly... What needs to be done to them?

Do keep some uniforms for post retirement use and family history. If your installation has a thrift shop where service members could purchase your excess items, give to them. Alternatively remove all military insignia from uniforms and contribute to Goodwill.

When I got out I just gave my left overs to my soldiers. Took a duffle bag to the CP and told them to have at it. What was left I took to those donation bins that the salvation army often has around most towns and dumped the stuff that was in good shape in there.

For "dress" stuff I believe there are organizations that give uniforms to former service members to be buried in if they don't have a set of their own anymore.

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
