Consider yourself extremely luck these are not the barracks of days gone by. No Firefights in the hallway or between neighboring barracks, no star cluster, arty or grenade sim attacks not to mention CS/Smoke grenades in the duct work. In addition to the 0200 drunken Rambo knife fights in the hallway, no passed out drunks in the shiters or showers, no repelling both reg and Ausie out the windows or roof. No clouds of weed in the halls from rooms that are sealed off with a right guard can in the lock latch :) No motorcycles in the stairway or rooms, nobody tapping into the intercom to broadcast bad porn or messages from GOD,
ON a serious note get your duties and responsibilities and do the best that you can, have your contact for the NCOIC/OIC above you just I case and make sure nobody burns the barracks down or robs the place blind while the troops are away. There will always be somebody over you that doesn't want a career ending bullet hitting them when the entire unit area is filled with firefighters or MP's. Rear “D” troops tend to be a mixed bag and if you are lucky you don’t have the trash around you.

SGT Andrew Dejesus - The fact that I served so long after those fun filled years says a lot :) The more complicated and career ending stories are not what one would write about :)

Just like Duty NCO... rude herd on the denizens of the barracks, keep them from burning/tearing the place down, keep the parties to a reasonable level, prevent any overt illegal activity, break up any drunken brawls...

You know, be the voice of reason & the surrogate for the Company Commander...

Yup... but IIRC correctly CQ was just a random snuffy... Barracks NCO is, by definition, an NCO with command authority.

SGT Andrew Dejesus - I would put it more like den mother for the troops in "your" house. like the others have said, keep the place clean and functioning, and occasionally have to mother someone through their problems that for some reason they cannot or will not take to their TL or SL, (assuming none of them are actually YOURS) you can be that friendly ear outside the chain of command / concern, who they can talk to without showing their backside officially, who has some real authority, but once removed if you will. Maybe get some of the worse ones back on the right track as they may not get as defensive with you as they do with their actual CoC. We are all in this together out there, I have had to take other NCO's troops under my wing to get them straightened out, and they have done the same for me. 2 (or more) NCO's say the exact same thing, but the delivery may be totally different. but our mutual goal is to get and keep the kids on the right track. So I would put that into your list of duties (unofficially of course)
