I was recently asked to interview a candidate that applied for a position working for one of my peers. Two hours before we were supposed to meet, the candidate cancelled the interview. His reason was clear, he had not considered the impact of a higher cost of living prior to applying for a position in a different state. Are you considering a move out of state? Do you know how much it will really cost you to move once you get there?

That is something that you definitely have to look for when applying for a job out of state. Just because it is paying more does not mean you will be better off. Being from SoCal I know that most places that I go will be less than here however there is the possibility that it won't be. There are many calculators out there that can help you compare cost of living.

CPO Tim Dickey Definitely something that you have to consider-for example, I was looking at a possible move from Alabama to Northern California. Cost of housing is fully double what it is in AL. I was able to make that determination based on cost of living calculators on the internet, but more importantly, was able to check out realty websites to make a truly informed decision. 20 years ago, that would not have been possible. When considering a job that involves relocation, you have to be smart.

Of course, you should always have done your research prior to "2 hours ahead of the interview"
