Sergeant thru Master Sergeant are called Sergeant when speaking face to face. If referring to said NCO from Sergeant thru Master Sergeant in the 3rd person, then you refer them by their full rank title. The rank of First Sergeant (or 1SG) is addressed as First Sergeant regardless. There is a caveat to this though. When speaking to said NCOs via txt message or even email, it is best to use their full rank title abbreviation (SGT, SSG, SFC, MSG).

A1C Medrick "Rick" DeVaney - If you're talking to the NCO directly, you just use Sergeant or Sarge for all NCO ranks E-5 and above. If you are being polite or differential, whole ranks are used, as Jarheads do. As in passing a SGM, by your leave, Sergeant Major.

Major, Or Should I Say "Sir"? _ If I'm Working With An NCO And We Knew Each Other Well, I'd Just Call Him "Sarge", As In My Days It Was A Friendly Term NOT An Insult As Some My Think It To Be Today. It Showed No Disrespect Nor Was It Thought Of As Such. Now It Seems To Be A BFD When It Need Not Be. It's A Term, No More No Less. ~ Should Officers Be Upset When Referred By Rank Rather Than Saying "Sir/Mam"? -- Should You Say "Hi" Or "Hello"? Why Isn't "Hi" An Insult For Having Fewer Letters? -- Why Are We Turning This Into A Big Deal ? LOL

A1C Medrick "Rick" DeVaney - To me rank is fine and for Lieutenants the standard LT is good. Heck, I was a SGT before I was a 2LT.

MAJ Ronnie Reams -
Thanks, Major, But I Seldom Recall Using The Word "Sir" To Anyone While In The Service. I Referred To Them By Rank, Sgt, Lt, Major, Captain, And So On.-- My Reasoning? It Goes Way Back Into History, Perhaps Before The Romans; It Reminded Those Under The Officers Command That They're Inferior To The Officers & All Officers Are Their Superiors And You're To Do As They Command. - Well, I Don't Buy It. - So Since It Was And Still Is Acceptable To Refer To Them By Their Rank, That's What I Did Then - And That's What I Do Now; At Least In My Mind, It Keeps Both Side As Equals. -- I Hope You Understand My Point Of View Even If You May Not Agree With It. -- I Meant No Disrespect By Doing So, Nor Do I Believe Any Of Them Took It As Such Either.
~~ I Would However, Be Interested In Hearing From Some Of The Other Officers & Enlistees As Well, To Get Their Take On This Subject; I Simply Think It's Interesting And Am Curious About Their Opinions ~~

The E-5 and above verbal collective of Sergeant doesn't apply to the Marines... unless you want to be really, really, really strong... just sayin'.

Once got to see what happens when an Army guy called a Marine Staff Sergeant "Sergeant." It wasn't very pretty.

Haha! That’s hilarious. I learned that first hand. Before joining and learning the ranks I called a Marine Staff Sergeant “Sergeant”, and he was livid. I found it funny at the time but later on learned why he was mad. Lol

When I Enlisted, Those 2 Little Strips Hanging There Meant "I'm An Airman 2nd Class".
And Since They're Still Attached, I Haven't Been Promoted, Nor Perhaps Issued A Pay Increase, How Did I Become An Airman 1st Class? (:--)> --Tiz A Puzzlement --
