This question was posed to me in during one of my recent courses, and I thought it was very interesting to hear everyone views. Obligated service isn't anything new, so should we implement such actions. Young people have the choice of university after which they are obligated to service or military service for (4) years. There are positives and negatives on both sides of the coin.

*To Amend my previous question, I'm not saying this would be a good idea or bad idea. Rather I thought it would be interesting to hear from everyone on RP.*

No. Nothing good comes of forced military service. It's bad enough sometimes the people we get who volunteer.

Also remember standards - not everyone can or should serve. You will not be able to get everyone to serve in the military. Why do people think everyone should serve in the military and it makes them better?

That's another reason.

I just don't get why people think the military can "fix" someone or make them more appreciative. Everyone has a different experience who has served. Sometimes the military makes people more disillusioned, etc.

No, Though I do believe if we began that many years ago we would have created a more patriotic society. Today, they would come claim PTSD for eating MRE's and SOS and live a disabled life on the government.

Its hard enough to be around people who volunteered, and then didn't want to be there. Your life can depend on the people with you. You don't want those people to be people who are there by force, not by choice. Its a bad idea. Now if you say they have to do that, or Peace Corps, or help in a shelter or soup kitchen, that would be great. We took our kids to a soup kitchen several times at Thanksgiving and they spent it serving homeless people instead of eating turkey and watching football. My only regret is we didn't do it more.
