I am direct commission Veterinary Corps (0-4), USAR. I have completed Phase 1 BOLC and reserved to attend Phase 2 September 2018. I have been told that I cannot go to gun range with my unit during AT because I have not been to BOLC. Can find no regs that state that I cannot go.

Since everyone from Privates to Generals regularly qualify with assigned weapons, I cannot see where BOLC would preclude you from attending the range.

My unqualified guess is this a bureaucratic unit rule.

MAJ(P) (Join to see) - Tell whoever said that, that the rifle range is a major part of BCT. Never went to the range in AIT

SP5 Peter Keane - You are correct, thank you. I got my terminology/acronyms mixed up. The conversation occurred a while back and they most likely mentioned BCT vs AIT. Chalk that up to a little water behind my ears, remember, I've got BOLC at the end of the month.

Hello Gentlemen. I gave a call to range control and got no answers. I then sent an inquiry to BN S1 and S3. I was told the following:

There is no regulation regarding pre-BOLC soldiers firing weapons or participating in LFX. It is commander's discretion based on risk assessment matrix.

I can imagine that a commander may be averse to allowing this in the event there was a mishap, i.e., ND, squib, OOB detonation, etc, etc. So there we have it, Sir. At least as far as I can reckon we are out of luck until after BOLC. I hope that helps Sir.
