Sir, I believe that the most important trait that all leaders should possess is honesty. Honesty in both word and in deed. I feel that if you have honesty, all the other traits and values that a leader should possess will fall into place. If you are honest, then you can be trusted. An honest and trusted leader will be followed anywhere.

Three traits that every leader should have are competence, character, and commitment. Competence--not only the ability to know your job, but also know what leadership style to use, how to handle certain situations, and deal with a crisis. Character-- to live and adhere to the Army Values, the NCO creed, and the Soldiers creed. Committment-- staying until the job...no mattr how small, is done. Whether it is a tough mission or a Soldier calling you in distress at 0230, you are there until the job is done.

Part of that competence is knowing your own strengths & weaknesses. Areas of weakness, I made sure to utilize my people in which those things were their strong points. Too many people in leadership positions don't acknowledge their own weak points & will push thru a flawed plan all because they are afraid of allowing others to assist in their decision making process. I guess that is the character part. The commitment to the mission is putting aside all of those personal feeling & shortcomings so you can have a maximum outcome for the mission. All good points there Top.
