I am sort of new to RP, and I have yet to see the value in this program. What exactly is the value of "influence points"?

Influence Points reflect two things; 1) How strong your network is on RallyPoint, and 2) How much the community has valued your contributions.

It's obvious that those who are most engaged (forming new connections, contributing more, etc.) will have more influence points than those that don't, but Influence Points also help differentiate those that are similarly active but contribute in different ways.

Some members pay attention to it, and some don't. If you naturally build your network and add value in the Answers forum, then your points will go up as your add more value. There is nothing "special" you need to do. The "value" you gain is forming new contacts in different professional circles, connecting with the community, while contributing and learning...

Haha, a lot of deep thinking and reasoning for influence points. Lets just be honest, RP makes a little change from ads. Think "click bait" to a far lesser (and annoying) degree. Nothing wrong with that at all. More participation means more ad views. No better way to accomplish this, especially considering that the ads here are not intrusive compared to most other sites, than to appeal to a basic competitive/achievement nature? I don't think (or at least I hope) anyone is horribly obsessed with making points, but even with profile completion, we're lured into that with "make 1000 points" or whatever, because "why not?" Im not sure how much more "customized" ad delivery can be on a site that revolves around military service, but I'd imagine if they wanted to, you could get categorized by your location or interests.

The points do not allow you to buy anything or whatnot, but just a way to gauge how many hours you have been on the site. This allows you to then bring that number to the Rally Point Anonymous (RPA) meetings. I have gone through four sponsors so far; nobody seems to be able to help me curb the habit.

LTC (Join to see) when I replied to the thread I didn't notice it was posted 8 years ago. After I discovered it I found your button about the RPA Meetings & 4 sponsors very amusing. I definitely qualify for that meeting... :-). I'm very familiar with the 12 Step Program... having 40+ years of sobriety. I thoroughly enjoy the time
I spend on RP... having made a few friends and a number who don't appreciate my words of wisdom... :-). Hope to see you... as time allows.

It's a hook to keep us engaged with a scoring system. Pretty brilliant considering how competitive us military types are.

A hook that can be gamed by individuals who tag others who tag them in their posts. The name tagging takes away from the value of the influence score imho.

For a time I chased influence score and got up to #25 and came to realize that it really isn't in the big scheme of things worth the time invested.

The time you lose chasing influence points can't be recovered. It literally ruins your health sitting behind a computer for hours and hours...and for what? So you can be somebody important on a pseudo-military website?

The people that SHOULD actually matter to you are those you see every day, who you ignore to spend hours on the computer interacting with other people - who you have never met - on the Internet...

Priorities!
