What type of things have you brought with you on deployments to help you unwind and relax. I have a lot of young soldiers that have not deployed and they are looking for ideas of how to relax or what to bring. What things have helped you? What things did you find did not help at all?

Good sized Telescope and Tripod. Best way to see the stars is after you free the hell out of a country and there is no power in the country. Best views from the planet. It was confiscated by people who had no name and who were not there. I got a "chit" for a telescope when I returned to the US. Something about reading a newspaper from 20 miles was appealing to them. My friend also had his digital camera confiscated, classified, and he got a "chit" as well. When those people need something........

If people who aren't there ask for anyhing for the mission I am humbled to be of the miniscule support to them. I also dug the people who weren't there a crapper and scrounged ammo, water, and all the flight time they could get in a OH-58D.

They didn't say they would keep it, but once they took images, it was classified and he lost it. He was PISSED and they bought him one in Kuwait and gave it to him. It was MUCH better. If it is critical to mission success, they will take the pacemaker right out of your chest.

Now imagine that you and a hooch-mate have gone together to buy a six-inch Newtonian from PACEX, together with the mount, a nifty range of eyepieces and a solar filter.

Then imagine that you are out with this lovely implement just around Midnight, gazing at Saturn and many other wonderful sights from the middle of a no-grow in Camp John F McDermott not too far from BN HQ.

Further imagine that some Security types show up and initially decide to confiscate the unauthorized ordnance (or whatever the heck that large white tube is).

Eventually, after we showed them Saturn, they went about their business.

I brought a journal and wrote whenever I could: what was happening, what was going through my head, anything. It's interesting to go back and read those journals years later.
