What happens to VSI recipients once their annuity runs out?

I am currently in the retired reserve. I left active duty in 1996 as a VSI recipient and took a commission in the IRR as a contingency of my VSI annuity. In 2005, they transferred me to the retired reserve because I received my second pass-over to LTC. When my VSI ran out in 2017, I expected to be discharged from the US Army Reserve because I don’t have a 20 year letter. But that hasn’t happened. What can I expect in this case? As a member of the retired reserve, I assume that I am still a mobilization asset.

MAJ R. Andrew Hoskinson, it’s paradoxical to me because I don’t see how you can be assigned to the Retired Reserve without a twenty year letter. How are you considered a retiree?

I didn’t know about the VSI program, MAJ R. Andrew Hoskinson. Thanks. However, if you’re indeed assigned to the Retired Reserve, as a commissioned officer, you’ll not receive a discharge. You will be subject to recall until attainment of age 60, after which you’ll be officially retired and removed from the Retired Reserve.
As for the type of retiree you’ll be, and the benefits associated with your status, I’m afraid I’m not going to be much help.

Did you ever figure this out? I'm in the same situation. I have my DD Form 2 (red retired reserve ID) but need to transition to "regular retired".
