My husband was stationed at our current duty station and we lived off base unmarried,since then we moved onto base after getting married 2 years ago He just re-enlisted and got put in for fort drum in NY This will be our actual first PCS as a family How long is the packing process for family of 3 2 bedroom with minimal stuff? Do the movers actually pack everything and unpack it at each duty station? We plan to stay with his aunt a week or two before the report date but the move is from KY to NY so transit won’t be more than a few days. I don’t think the army will pay to move stuff till the house is move in ready? They say his report date is April 20th can we move in a week or two before then or exactly the 20th? What if housing had a place a week or two before then or just right after? How do the expenses work if you may be short on cash?

- Pack in a day
- Load truck in a day.
- They will unpack probably in a day.
- I would put all your valuables like in the trunk of your car.
- Have your husband get Permissive TDY authorized before leaving the old post. That will give you hotel and meals paid for ten days.
- I am making a strong assumption that the military will pay for temporary storage until housing is available.
- Make sure his orders authorizes two POVs so you can get mileage for two vehicles.
- Make sure his Government Travel Card is working before leaving. The GTC is authorized for PCSing.
- You will get a dislocation allowance of around $2200 for the PCS move.
- Mileage is 20 cents/mile for each vehicle. You will get reimbursed for hotel and meals while you are traveling. My guess is around $100 and $130 respectfully per day. I really don't know the maximum limits.
- 350 miles is considered a days worth of traveling. You need to be safe instead of rushing it.
- MAKE SURE he out processes his DTS from the losing unit.
- A few months from leaving the post, call transportation about the availability of transportation for your household goods.
- When he gets his orders have him go to the transportation office immediately to coordinate with them.

Caitlin Williams the planning factor is 1000 pounds per room, plus variance for oversize items. They will tell you three days to pack and a day or two to load. They'll cram two days of packing into three.
The movers will pack and unpack. They are supposed to. Most people haven't figured out where everything goes and simply do it themselves. They are supposed to reassemble furniture like beds or things they took apart.
The Army doesn't care about move in ready. You can store your HHG for up to 90 days, possibly longer if you talk to JPPSO.
Be advised, if you do a,door to door move, the likelihood of damage and theft is reduced. If you wait, it goes into local storage. Crates are loaded and unloaded multiple times. I've had whole crates show up a day later after some puzzled looks from the carrier. If you can secure housing before the 20th and move in, that's your business. The report date is when he has to report to in and out processing. He has to show up no later than the twentieth. Check with housing as they sometimes won't put you on the list until you are signed in off leave. Off post, you will not have BAH started until he inprocesses.
You have TLA and DLA split between losing and gaining installation. Google DFAS temporary lodging expense, PCS move expense, and disclocation allowance. Your spouse should have gotten all this at his levy brief and transportation counseling....which you can attend.
