I don't think people are afraid of being criticized nearly as much as those that just can't take hearing criticisms. Think of the After Action Review process, although it's purpose is to not only identify sustains but also weaknesses, many leaders often find it difficult to hear that their section, platoon, or company didn't meet the standard. Some of these people either don't have think skin or just think they are plain better than everyone else.

Some people take professional criticism personally, they take it as an attack on their being- as if they are no longer human, or in some cases, no longer perfect as they once were intheir own eyes.

Constructive criticism is big part of professional and personal growth. If I am all jacked up, I would hope that someone would kindly let me know. Where the issues come into play is in the delivery of said criticism. If it is about life, limb or eyesight, immediate feedback utilizing the most direct method is warranted. If it is an on-the-spot-correction type of deal or an AAR of a training event or a brief, then a little more thought should be placed in the method and timeliness of the delivery.

What I do not professionally appreciate are those who are in positions of authority (by grade or position) who like to "nit-pick" the way you do business. Usually this is done using a condescending tone that is uncalled for. It is also usually done within direct observation or earshot of subordinates. Just because you execute a task differently than someone else, that does not make it wrong. It only emphasizes a different way to complete the task at hand.

TSgt Marshall; very good information...thank you for sharing. No one likes negative criticism, especially when given in public. I think constructive criticism is very important, it is the way we learn and improve. How criticism is received is dependent on the delivery.
