How do I pick up an AGR slot after leaving active duty?

It's not as easy as you would think after coming from active duty. When you switch over, plan for a backup for at least 2-3 years. You may need to apply for a tech position first to network yourself and show potential. Then, apply for an AGR position when one opens up. It may take you a few times to apply, but don't give up.
Be proactive, innovative...put yourself out there. Stay in compliance with appearance and physical fitness. No excuses, don't sound like you are new to the Army. If you want people to take you serious, don't give them a reason to overlook you. There is a difference between the good idea fairy and making positive recommendations. When developing a new idea, answer these questions:
What does the unit look like now? What's wrong? Observations/assessments (from you, subordinate units, knowledgeable people about the issue)?
How will this benefit the unit?
Eventually, how will this benefit the organization as a whole once it is proved effective?
How will this make things become more efficient?
Pros/Cons list of your recommendation?
What are the requirements from other sections or people to make sure this works?
How much will it cost?
What updates will you provide once the change is applied? What will the presentation look like? What will the takeaways be? How will you assess the effectiveness of the change?

AGR is not like applying for a regular job. You submit your packet, if you get selected you go on a list, and IF a slot opens up in your rank and MOS they pick from the top of the list and work their way down.
Most positions are E5 and up. Need to maintain membership in NG or Reserve to be eligible for AGR (in the branch you are a member of); cannot apply for NG AGR in the Reserves and vise versa.
Talk to a Retention NCO.

All Soldiers who have an AGR application that is currently more than one year old must submit a new AGR application to be considered for the AGR Program.
If you attempt, but are unable to download and/or upload the new AGR application, please contact our office immediately for assistance.
*Note: The AGR application expires 365 days from the date of submission.
Notifying You of Your AGR Selection for the AGR Program:
You will receive a “Congratulation email” notification from a technician to inform you of your selection for the AGR Program. You will have 48 hours to respond to the AGR offer. Also, your "My Record Portal status will be updated to "Selected for AGR Assignment". The accessions process normally takes between 30-45 days for us to publish your assignment order. A technician is assigned to walk you through the entire process.
AGR Accessions Process:
All vacant positions are normally filled by Soldiers already in the AGR Program. However, when the vacancies cannot be filled, a new accession is required. Our office utilizes the Consideration List to fill these vacant positions. We normally fill vacant positions with a Soldier one grade below the required grade for the position, (i.e. Soldier is E4, and position to fill is E5). You are under no obligation to accept an AGR offer.
However, if you don’t response or we can't reach you, we will go to the next qualified individual on the list. If you decline an offer, we will go to the next qualified individual on the list. Soldiers that decline an offer will not receive another offer until 12 months from the date of the decline.
Submitting Contact Information Updates:
Visit My Record, a self-service portal for Reserve Soldier's, enables most Reserve Soldiers access to update their own contact information including address, phone numbers and email address changes.
For additional assistance with your AGR application, please contact us via Email or call [login to see] . Emails should be sent via your AKO email account.

When you are clearing you will see the installation retention office which will have recruiters for the Guard and Reserve. They will work with you and you can always reach out to the them now. Am I on target with that advice SGM Matthew Quick
