My question is can someone get a ranger contract at enlistment? If not, what is the best route? I got 11B at enlistment because they wouldn’t give me ranger and I thought it was a good route. I ended up in a Mech Infantry unit and the only shot I had was to re-enlist for Ranger. Are there any recruiters or rangers out there that can offer some perspective?

Unfortunately, most 11Bs are just uneducated about the schools process. You could have called your branch after being on station a year and requested Ranger or you could have emailed the 75th recruiter at your first duty station if you wanted to go there and attend Ranger school through them. Your unit doesn't have to be the one who pays for Ranger school and Ranger branch is always looking for people to attend, they're always looking for SL1 and SL2 Soldiers

Thanks for calling me a stupid infantryman Jason :) Just kidding. I wish I knew then what I know now. While I'm proud of my time in the Army and really enjoyed it, I could have gotten so much more out of that time. Thanks.

SSG Ken Schiffner Ranger smash! Rawr!!
I feel the same way, there are so many things like schools, pay, and promotions then I got screwed out of because I didn't know, or my leaders didn't know how to fix. That's why I am a career counselor now, because it gives me the chance to help these Junior enlisted who are in the same spot

I just noticed where you said I could have emailed the 75th recruiter. There was no such thing as email when I was in the Army. Al Gore had not yet invented the internet:)

Look the 40 Option/Ranger Contract only gets you a shot at the RASP/school- you still have to make the cut or needs of the service. You can ask for the school at any time, just might not see the Rgt.

Yes, it's called an Option 40.
