I asked the education question to some section supervisors last week and got the dear in the headlights look in return. The question I asked was " Have you started on any college of education to better yourself ?"
I started to give directions to our local education center and what needs to be accomplished once they arrive. I felt like I need to hold a Company formation to get this out to the masses.
1. Correspondence Courses
2. CLEP exams
3. Online College Courses
4. Traditional College Courses
5. ASVAB improvement
6. Online tutoring at armyonesourxe.com
7. Career evaluation by your college towards degree program credits
If you have more tips to add to the discussion, I welcome them. This is not an argument platform.

Great subject SFC Ronnie Seaton Jr! Once the Service Member invests in themselves, they typically do not experience much misconduct. Additionally, the experience (and knowledge) learned will help them become more of a critical thinker which improves the performance of the unit.

Agreed, SFC Ronnie Seaton Jr. Inform the troops of the opportunities, point them towards the ed center, and off they should go. Part of the problem, in my opinion, has nothing to do with not knowing the opportunities exist ... and everything to do with apathy. I saw it when I was in. Some valued higher education and sought out the opportunities; others did not. I suspect it's still the same story.

I also recognize that some assignments are more education friendly than others. When I was in the 82nd, it was tough to get out of field exercises to go to school. In fact, it was frowned upon - believe it or not - by many. Later, though, when I was at strategic counterintelligence assignments, college was highly encouraged by everyone, even peers. There was a definite cultural difference between the two branches as regards higher ed. I saw it first hand.

Still, putting the word out - again and again - is a great idea. Then it's up to the individual to decide for him- or herself.

I feel the same way on all points. I want more for my soldiers and I want them to know the opportunity is out there for them.

We have to inform them and motivate them to think about life after the military, and what will help them to advance in the military as well. Most of my NCOs are currently enrolled in college and three of them recently earned their Associates Degree. I only have NCOs in my company without our CDR and XO.

Exactly this. I was in for 8 years and 3 months. I did nothing for 8 years. While I was on terminal, I went to Base Education, completed my A/S and was 3 classes from my B/S. I could have started a month earlier and been done.... Pure laziness on my part.
