I am adamant about encouragement and mentoring and development. I can count the stars in the sky for those that said I would never get promoted. I came up on big shoulders, and I make a commitment to pay forward by encouraging and mentoring.

I have tried my best to pass on the knowledge I have gained and accumulated over my 27 year career, I attempt to do this by mentoring the many younger and junior NCOs, Officers and Soldiers here on RP, and I also still try to do the same at the installations that I am near when I happen to be on them.

I am hoping that I can be a positive influence to many, but if I am able to make a difference in one life that is an accomplishment alone, and all the others are just bonuses that are able to pay it back and forward at the same time in my eyes.

Whether I'm pushing Privates at BCT (or supervising their Drill Sergeants, for that matter), I do everything I can to make sure people leave thinking "when I grow up, I want to be just like him".  Privates think that way about their Drill Sergeants.  I want the same tune in my Drill Sergeants' heads - I wanna be like Top. In so doing, I leave the Army in better shape than what I found.  So do my successors.

When I doubt, I always refer to Paragraph 4 of the Drill Sergeant Creed "I will lead by example, never requiring a Soldier to perform a task I would not do myself."

In most cases, the message gets through and legacy planted.

I have always believed that leadership is caught it is not taught. When you see a pattern, you emulate it. When you have someone who constantly raises expectations you reach for the stars.

I commend you for your passion and dedication to building our future leaders.

I approach every aspect of my military life with one mantra: Train your replacement. It is all about leaving a positive legacy.

I commend you on the pay forward process. When we look beyond ourselves and mentor, develop, and encourage others you realize early in your career how you treat others matters.
