My wife is currently pregnant and will be in a high risk pregnancy for the duration till full term. That is 7 months away. We have to travel 7 hours to get the pernitologist. They gave us a 3 day pass this time but the visits will be weekly sometimes even 2 days a week. This is all out of pocket due to her being on select. (There is no option to put her on prime due to the tone it would take to switch her over and get a preliminary scan then a new referral) just trying to figure out how I should go about this?.

What is your unit doing To help? Switch to prime. There is medical TDY. Normally it is coordinated by the MTF. Go see a patient advocate with your squad leader.

They took me to AER and gave me a 3 day pass. I was told when I tried to switch that getting a new referral for perinatology would take about a month. We don’t have a month. The situation is delicate and we have to come back weekly and if select is canceled they can’t see us till the new referral is made. And I will go ask thank you sir.

PV2 (Join to see) you need to ask about medical TDY. Engage the patient advocate with your FLL

If all your other options are a no go, you might consider sending your wife to live with a relative that has the necessary medical personnel/facilities close at hand. Sure, you would be separated, but she and the baby would be getting the necessary attention. If it helps your mindset, pretend you’ve been deployed (actually the opposite). At least this way, you can call every night, and she can visit you as your budget allows.

Good luck.

Why are you 7 hours away from a provider?

I’m on fort wainwright my wife needs to see a specialist for high risk pregnancy due to a severe diagnosis of turners syndrome in our baby. This requires us to go to Anchorage which is 7 hours away (only 3 major cities in Alaska really)

PV2 (Join to see) medical TDY. The Army will cover your travel costs. Also, start working on a compassionate reassignment request and once your son is born, your EFMP

Wow! You should try to get assigned to Ft Rich as soon as possible. Work with your chain of command now. Sometimes a Chaplain can help—they know people. Come winter your drive time to Anchorage could double. Look into Space A travel on AMC flights between Elmendorf and Wainwright or Eilson.

Lt Col Jim Coe I forgot about the flights. Wainwright has an air ambulance company with the 1-52nd. Helicopters always have to make flights and it’s a good bet that with a word from his BC to their BC he could get on some of those flights the pilots need for flight hours.
