American Fighter Aces receive Congressional Gold Medal. What are your thoughts on this type of recognition?

The Congressional Gold Medal was presented to the American Fighter Aces collectively today during a ceremony in Emancipation Hall at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center.
Public Law 113-105, which requires the United States Mint to strike the Congressional Gold Medal for the American Fighter Aces, also authorizes the bureau to strike and sell bronze reproductions of the medal. The three-inch medal (product code 15MC) is priced at $39.95, and the 1.5-inch medal (product code15MD) is priced at $6.95. Both medals will be available for purchase starting today at 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time via the bureau's online catalog at http://catalog.usmint.gov/ and at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may call 1-888-321-MINT (6468).

It's great to be recognized federally but where does it stop? Should snipers with over X confirmed kills receive similar recognition?

MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca that is the 500 lb gorilla in the room. You can recognize a fighter ace, sniper, or even an infantryman by the number of confirmed kills that they achieve. What about the corpsmen/ medics? will they have a gold coin for the number of saves they have? What about the mechanics? Will they have a medal for the bolts tightened? and then cooks for the number of meals prepared? Then it becomes like a lot of things in society where awards are just handed out for showing up. The flip side is that it establishes a precedent that some functions are more important than others. What good is a fighter pilot without a properly maintained aircraft? The pilot gets the accolades, but they are part of a team. If the team doesn't function, instead of accolades, that pilot receives a funeral.

My cousin got 12 Air Medals with two confirmed kills of Nazis in WWII. DFC as well. I have done a mockup of his career on Together We Served Air Force where I am a historian. His brother was commander of the 13th Bombardment Sq in 1953. A LTC Stanley Kline.

My mom told me about him, so I did research from several sources and that is not all, I had two more cousins who were pilots and one was a female and I think she died in a crash. The things you can learn about people and not even be fully aware. thanks, that is cool.. wayne.

Thing is, I doubt that we will ever see another Fighter Ace. It seems that air superiority is going to be replaced with close air support. Not that one is more important or valuable than the other, it is just an observation.
