Also, who is typically in charge of coordinating and approving them...Family Readiness Group representatives or the Unit Commander?
Thanks for your help.

I was an FRG leader a few years back so unless things have changed, this was how I managed things based on the guidance I was given.

The unit commander has nothing to do with actual fundraising even though the FRG reports to them. Your FRG Leader will be able to approve a fundraiser with guidance from the Base/State (if NG) Family Readiness coordination staff. They will have a list of acceptable fundraising events the unit FRG can participate in. You also want to have a Friends of (Your unit) organization that can accept donations on behalf of the unit and FRG. There are some technicalities about direct donations vs. fundraising.

FRG's can accept up to $10000 annually in donations; $10000 is the max. But first and foremost, the FRG is not a money generating entity. It gets a little dicey when it comes to fund raising.

"the FRG is a command-sponsored organization of family members, volunteers, Soldiers and civilian employees belonging to a unit, that together provide an avenue of mutual support and assistance, and a network of communications among the family members, the chain of command, chain of concern, and community resources. The FRG also provides feedback to the command on the state of the unit “family.” "

You may be considered a private organization if thats where you're headed.

Some your guidance will come from:
AR 210-22 Private Organizations on Department of the Army Installations
Joint Ethics Regulation DoD 5500.7-R para 3-210
AR 600-20 Army Command Policy
AR 608-1, Appendix J Army Community Service
AR 600-29 Fund-Raising Within the Department of the Army paragraph 1-5

Looks like it's sort of a slippery slope.

I am not in the NG, but am dealing with an FRG leader in my home town's Unit. They would like to use my company for a fund raiser, but I was a little unsure of the laws and the Army's stance on fund raisers.

SPC Darin Day Unacceptable would be anything where alcohol to excess was involved, door to door type of soliciting, exploitive type stuff - wet T-shirt contests, in general anything that would embarrass the unit, it's members or the service in general.

Selling apparel sounds perfectly fine and you have the copyright issue covered.

True, units can not run external fundraisers for themselves. We used to do 50/50 raffles in the ranks to support our "after drill" club or for a sunshine fund if a member got married, had a baby, etc.

To add to the comments from @SSG (Service Member) They are correct in that the FRG is not a fundraising entity for the unit. It can only fundraise for it's own benefit like hosting a FRG family function/party/outing or sending sundries and gifts to deployed SMs. The money it raises has to be used to support all families and SM equally. So sunshine funds and donations to the unit "after drill" club are NOT permissible.

The unit can't play the "If I didn't see it, it didn't happen" game either. the FRG is reportable to the unit commander and the commander is responsible for any misconduct or misappropriation of funds.

If you have a question - you should be checking with the JAGs - while I know we do things different in the Air Guard - funding raising is going to be the same or very similar. Alchol and unit fund raising - do not go together. There are guidelines are how many times you can have fund raisers, can not do them while CFC is gonig on, etc. To be on the safe side - ask first and don't assume it is okay. Just my OHANG paralegal opinion.

Do artifacts donated to a unit or unit museum belong to that unit or to the Army?

To the Army, whether the DOD allows the commander to accept depending upon what it is, value and the donor.
