What about more PTAD for new fathers? 10 days isn't near enough to help new mothers adjust to having a newborn. It's even worse if the have a C-Section

I had C sections every time (stubborn boys). My husband was granted extra leave no problems. I think they do father leave per need rather than set times. Everyone's situation is different.

With my Units high operational tempo I wasn't allowed to take leave until 2 months later... 6 hours after checking her out of the hospital I was on a plane to California for a month and a half

I agree, 10 days just wasn't enough. My wife also had a C-section and was hurting. Also, it just didn't give me enough Daddy/Daughter time!

What SSgt (Join to see) is referring to is a relatively new policy (I want to say it came out sometime around or after 2007) that grants 10 days non-chargeable "baby" leave for Fathers. If we Dads want to take extra leave, it's up to your command and it is chargeable against your leave balance.

Great! Concur with Sgt Morgan. Currently on Paternity PTAD and 10 days does feel short. It ain't free time, it reminds me of field ops with all of the work and broken sleep.

The PTAD was definitely short, and even though you are back at work and the wife is running things on the homefront, that doesn't mean you aren't pulling baby duty at night 50% of the time for that first month+ anyways.
I took two additional weeks of annual leave in addition to the PTAD, and my command was great about it, but we had mission to complete.
Seeing the "philosophy" that Hon. Mabus has been working under, I have a feeling PTAD will be on the agenda in the near future.

Here here! Luckily I was able to take regular leave in conjunction with baby leave as I was returning from WESTPAC, and my wife did definitely appreciate the extra help but it wasn't nearly enough time to help her out, do stuff around the house, and most importantly bond with my daughter!
