The Military Isn’t A Jobs Program

Going into 2016, the latest Gallup survey finds the economy is the most important issue on voters’ minds, with 86 percent of voters saying it is “extremely” or “very” important. Politicians and pundits won’t stop talking about how they think they can fix it. Paul Krugman in 2011 and 2012 said we should pretend there’s an alien invasion and spend money defending ourselves to stimulate the economy.

That’s not how the economy really works. Even Krugman’s hero, John Maynard Keynes, in his famous passage about digging holes (burying money underground) wrote, “It would, indeed, be more sensible to build houses and the like; but if there are political and practical difficulties in the way of this, the above would be better than nothing.” Spending money on something pointless is just wasting money.

SGT (Join to see) I read the article and I agree with the author on many of his points. I don't think denying immigrants from our military service is taking away jobs from natural born Americans. I had a number of non-US Citizens during my deployment and at the end they were able to gain their citizenship through service to the United States. Today they are great working and productive US Citizens. I would rather give immigrants a chance to prove themselves, use their skills and become productive tax paying citizens than have immigrants working here in the United States illegally. That just my opinion on the subject.

I agree with the article.  Isn't a volunteer force? Really the ones who want citizenship by severing are not taking away jobs from citizens.  I had the privilege of helping with a citizenship ceremony in Afghan.  It was an honor to watch one of my own troops cross over and become a citizen.

I am reminded of Starship Troopers --- if you served, you got your citizenship, and then you could get your driver's license, marriage/baby license, vote, etc. Those who did not do military time didn't get to be citizens....

PO1 Brian Schletty, Sir, That's exactly how I feel. They have to earn their citizenship.

Is this something new?    Swear I've had many an Airmen who gained their citizenship in this fashion.

Did they die in a war or get captured? If so, the question is directed as to what to do with their surviving, undocumented, family. If the haven't died or been a POW, the family will continue to reside in the U.S.
