I have just gotten into a new unit. I was talking to my commander about wanting to be a Victim's Advocate in the SHARP program due to my personal experience with sexual assault and my experience with the resources available and he loves the idea of having someone who has personal experience in this area. However, I'm not sure if there is a rank requirement for this and if so, can it be waived? I really want to help my fellow soldiers and take on these responsibilities. Thoughts?

SSG(P) (Join to see), according to AR 600-20, para 8-5 s: The UVA will be an NCO(SSG or higher), officer (1LT/CW2 or higher), or civilian (GS–9 or higher).

It is SSG or higher. However, this does not mean to just put your thoughts of your intentions on the back burner. It is our responsibility as Soldiers no matter what rank we hold to be the Force behind the Fight. To rid the best Army in the world of this negative culture as well as Intervene Act and Motivate (I AM). Just because you don't have the additional duty (YET) doesn't mean you can't provide a service to a fellow Soldier. Know your reporting options and where your SHARP VA or SARC is located should something ever happen (hopefully not)!

it seems nobody wanted to put how you can get around the rank. so I would like to add this note: Requests for exception to grade-level requirements for individual students must be processed through ACOMs, DRUs and ASCC [e.g., FORSCOM, TRADOC, AMC, IMCOM, MEDCOM, etc.] to HQDA SHARP Program Office for approval at least two weeks prior to the start of class in order to attend. ACOM/ASCC/DRUs may submit a blanket request for exception to grade-level requirements.
