Do you know the role of the Warrant Officer?

As the Army strives forward to the 2025 Operating Concepts, roles of Warrant Officers will continue to expand and many previous roles prior to 9/11 will reemerge as a focal point towards getting back to technical mastery of each Warrant Officer field.

I believe they decremented their importance years back when they commissioned them so they could command. They were most valuable as Technical SMEs without the hindrance of admin bureaucracy.

CW4 (Join to see) - I understand. It is a double edged sword. The command/management role provides good future resume and experience. It just migrated away from the old crusty warrant that could repair anything with duct tape and baling wire to get you running.

I know the feeling Sir, there are many Warrants Officers that need to stick to just being a SME and continue to learning their craft instead of spending time writing OPORD's, conducting MDMP, researching UCMJ and trying to interpret mission command. Some may not be able to find that delicate balance while others will welcome the change and challenge. I have a feeling that the old days of the Warrant Officer with the coffee mug diagnosing faults by sight and sound is a thing of the past.

CW4 (Join to see) - I carried my coffee mug into brigade headquarters this morning with steaming hot coffee in it and had just finished at 0200 in the morning adjusting some of the faults I usually find when running around close to the dirty boots on the line. Things don't have to change, but do, I also attend all the post functions with the utmost respect for the request to attend in the first place. The changing of the guard or representation at the table/meeting is becoming more and more what some wished for in the past. If invited, GO. If uninvited and honestly believe you have something to offer, find a way in and be relevant. Just my .02.

Thanks for your response Chief. I don't think drinking coffee and putting hands in your pockets is a big deal especially when you are truly working hard to be value added and maintain your status as the SME. I just hate the stereo type of Warrants Officers in regards to the coffee, cigarettes, mustaches and hands in the pockets. Warrants Officers know what we bring to the table but many others don't. Luckily I've served in units with Commands that truly valued Warrant Officers and all that we bring to the fight but not all of our bothers and sisters are that fortunate. Coming out of WOCS and WOBC and then again at WOAC, I've had TAC's, SGL's and Instructors all preaching how we have to change and become more professional do more than fix things.
