Has there ever been a time where recognition of your hard work actually resulted in a new opportunity?

Not at all. Most of the time, my work was used to justify Meritorious masts and Navy Achievement Medals for other people. the common justification was that "I was a Lance corporal, and doing tasks was my job".

Yes. Plenty of times my hard work created new opportunities.....
..... for my bosses who claimed it.

No but I've been told plenty of times "I can't promote you or move you to a higher position because you are too valuable where you are" and the classic "We can't give you an award because you aren't high enough in rank".

I had a slot for Pathfinder school a couple months out, I was running the S3 at the time and my NCOIc and the team were prepped to handle things while I was gone. We switched battalion commanders before my school dates. A week or two before I was to start, my BC pulls me in and says I can't go, I need you here.
So, I stayed and helped him out with things but I was upset. That was the second time I tried to go to Pathfinder. Both times, work at the unit was holding me back. So, I decided that since I didn't get my chance at Pathfinder, which is only two weeks, then I was going to request an internship at my local church as part of the Army Career Skills Program, which turned into 9 weeks. Worked well for me, I guess.
