How hard would it be to transfer to the IRR with only a few months left on my service obligation?

How long does it take to go to IRR? I'm 4 months from my MSO being fulfilled. Some personal issues have come up that I really can't ignore any longer. I was planning on staying in longer but I think it would be best if I just transfer to the IRR for the remainder of my time. How hard would this be to do? This is not a decision I make easily. Thanks for your assistance

Assuming you don't have some obligation to your state, you would send up a DA 4187 requesting to be transferred to the IRR.
Section III, check 'other' and put in Transfer to the IRR.
Section IV (Remarks) - reason for transfer and date you want it to be effective. Send up a memo providing the detail.
Depending on how fast they approve it, you might have it approved in time for your MSO to be finished.
Another route is to resign your commission (again, assuming you have no state obligation). If it takes effect and you have >3 months remaining on your MSO, you'll be transferred to the IRR. If you're within 3 months, then you'll separated completely.

It was farily easy for my enlisted USAR son - SSG. No idea how difficult or not it is for officers. My son had over a year left when he was able to transfer.

CPT Lawrence Cable SSG Bill McCoy - Yep. If you put forth the effort, you can find ways to earn points in the IRR. You won't be paid for the majority of them, but you can rack them up. A lot depends on how much effort you put into finding opportunities.
Making point in a drilling status (TPU or DIMA) is easy. Just doing the bare minimum (48 UTAs and 15 days of AT) gets you 78 points a year.
It USED to be easy to get points even if you weren't drilling - just knock out a couple of DL courses each month, and if you average 12 hours a month, you will get over your 50 points needed. That all changed back in 2016 with new guidance - no more retirement points for courses.
You can be put in a paid IDT status to will get a Soldier paid along with a retirement point, On the plus side, however, it must be command approved, is considered an ATA (Additional Training Assembly) and ATAs (for whatever reason) are limited to 12 per year .. IF there is funding available.

COL Randall C. - during the 90's, HRC seemed to be consistently soliciting for IRR Officers to augment Active Duty missions, be it peacekeeping (Balkans at the time), CAP missions or just fill in for units short on critical help. Amazing how drawdowns always leaves units short handed. If I re-did my IRR time, I would take advantage of those missions, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Prior to completing your MSO...not easy. Transition to IRR is dependant on your chain of command actioning your request; could take a few months. Most of my officers that have transfered took a minimum of 4 months and there was push back. You will need a strong justification and support of your command.

I actually connected to my ARCC. The reasons are very private and I'd rather not discuss them here . But my plan has been to stay in for one more mob, preferably overseas since I have one already. But family and health need to come first.

There is no need to share your personal reasons for transitioning. I was just letting you know the chain of command is going to want you to justify your request/rational for transfering (it's a requirement of the packet).

Understood. I spoke with my commander and he was a bit surprised but understood my need to take a knee. He asked me to consider other options rather than IRR. I told him I will follow up and the end of the week. I'm not sure what he is talking about though. I was curious, how long can I stay in the IRR?

Start the paperwork now for a requested date that is past your MSO.
