I was recently given orders to Ramstein, Germany as a "most eligible non-volunteer".  I have done two tours overseas already (Kadena AB/Chievres AB).  I also had a previous overseas tour (Aviano AB) cancelled based on service non-availability prior to my current assignment.  My daughter is enrolled in EFMP and with this assignment it was determined that services were not available for her. Being that I was a non-vol, AFPC looked for a unaccompanied short tour and found none available.  This left AFPC to want to send me on an unaccompanied long tour so I could serve my share of overseas tours.  Assignment cancellation was not an option per the AFI since I was a "non-vol" on this assignment.  I'm just wandering if anyone else has been put into this situation without volunteering for it.

Not sure how the Air Force works, but this are the exact situations that the EFMP were designed to prevent. I know that doesn't help but I would reference the regs covering EFMP and combat the situation with knowledge.

I had thought that as well but it's not the case.  In the AF Assignment's AFI it reads: AFI 36-2100 A25.6.5.  "If selected for an OS long tour as a non-volunteer and family member travel is disappoved based on the unavailability of general medical services a member may volunteer through the AFCC for an unaccompanied short tour in an effort to minimize family separation.  If there are no current or projected short tour requirements available, the unaccompanied long tour length must be served at the projected location."  When I spoke with our EFMP coor'd here she had never seen or heard of this happening.

Yeah that's crazy. Do you know anybody with the same qualifications as you that might want that assignment? The cases are rare that people can swap assignments (other than for officers) but it never hurts to ask around then call your branch manager to see if it's possible

That wasn't an option in my case since I was a non-vol.  Basically, I had to have a few folks make phone calls and ended up with a Short tour to Korea.  I applied for home-basing back to JBLE but ended up with a follow-on to MacDill AFB in Florida.
