Alabama doesn't tax military retirement so I settled here instead of NC or GA.
Income taxes are from 2-5% depending on income. Sales taxes is 4%

What part of AL? Hubby retired from FT Benning, GA and we still have acreage and house in Russell County (Just outside the back gate of Ft Benning). After 7 years there, we found many people to live very primitive and backwards and there were no good paying jobs, technology lacked, etc., until you get around Birmingham and more northward. My hubby worked as a courier and came across some very hillbilly type places that one would not want to go if their skin wasn't white. I'm from rural Texas and found that a little offensive.

Tennessee has a 9.6% sales tax. We have no state income tax (prohibited by state constitution amendment) though. Property taxes can be a bit on the high side depending on location.

Yes they are. But I prefer to live in a small town in Nebraska. The climate here sucks sometimes but I wouldn't live anywhere else. I have worked all over this great country and I don't have much use for oceans or mountains. I love the plains states. The people here are good hard working folks. It is a good place to raise kids. This is a strongly conservative state. We don't put up with the bullshit of New York or california. Sure the taxes are high but I will pay them and complain about them but it's worth it not to have to put up with liberal bullshit.
