A-10s to be deployed to Europe later this month. Are they walking back the talk of replacing it with the F-35 as a CAS platform?

The USAF is deploying more A-10s to Europe later this month in response to activities with the Russian military. Is this a tangible sign that they might be walking back the claim that the F-35 will be replacing it as the CAS platform?
A recent document stated that the F-35 would not be replacing the A-10 now, and that a new CAS-based platform will be developed along the lines of the A-10 in the near future.

I hope so SSgt (Join to see). The A-10 Warthog is a wonderfully designed plane that is very cost efficient, is excellent at destroying enemy infantry, artillery and armor forces, and strikes terror by both its appearance and the sound it emits as it approaches its targets.

This is the second time they tried to mothball the A-10 and had to reconsider.

The "problem" is that the Air Force said they were replacing it, and CONGRESS said no. I don't have a dog in the fight about whether it should stick around or not, but the reason everyone is so confused on it is that it's two very different ideas :-/

I think the Force was shown a shiny new toy & enough members were convinced of its capability that it was pushed up. Now that it has been built they are finding it is capable of many things, but can't seem to master anything. It looks like it should be a strike fighter - much like the Marines are putting it to use as.
I think this realization made the Force state that they will develop a true replacement for the CAS platform instead of a Renaissance Man platform.

the term "Jack of all trades, master of none" comes to mind. And that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but then saying it can't perform each given mission as well as the specialized platform it's replacing isn't truly fair. I think the need for a "dedicated" CAS platform has been stressed a lot recently and I think you're right, a new one will eventually be forthcoming.

As the OEM is no longer in business the costs of supporting the platform are going to increase and eventually will become unsupportable. A new platform needs to be fielded in order to ensure that there are no gaps in the capabilities that this system brings to the table.

Last month they released a paper saying that they will be developing a new CAS platform along the lines of the A-10 in order to have a next gen CAS bird. This is just about a 180 from their claims that the F-35 will be able to do everything the A-10 can.
