After going to the range do you have to clean M-16 three times, or does CLP only require 1 cleaning?

You clean it until your Squad Leader, Platoon Sgt, Company Gunny and the asshole at the armory has had enough fun pissing you off and say its good enough.

You damm straight! Clean that weapon until I say it is clean enough. Who are you to know when it is clean enough?? Or really piss the armor off and screw around and keep him late. He will remember!

In basic, we had to boil it. Then we had to wipe it and run cleaning rods down the barrel. i didn't know there that many places the D/S would look and find dirt/

I agree with SGM and 1SG and take pride in your rifle. It could one day save your life. Spend a few bucks on a good cleaning kit and clean the hell of it and it will be easier and you will be able to do it faster every time.

An honest answer is that if I recall correctly CLP serves several functions, it breaks down carbon and rusts, prevents rusts from forming by coating the parts and lubricates the action. To be honest a SINGLE thorough Cleaning is perfectly fine for a weapon. The reason that Amories went with several cleanings is because CLIP will continue to "bleed out" small amounts of carbon which will result in the apprearance of a "dirty" weapon. You can give it a good cleaning, leave a light coat on it and lock it away for a month, pick it up dry it off and its goofd to go

As a former armored, I can tell you the bigger cleaning problem is blanks. Live ammo never caused the problems we saw with a steady use of blanks in training.

Pretty much anyone above the rank of PFC would bury most of the blanks they were given, trying to fire as few as possible. Either that or give them to the newbie who was all fired up to make noise in the field.
I had one guy in my unit who fired about 500 out of his M16 in one day. The only thing that stopped him was it got so gummed up it kept jamming. He was on the dirty weapon list forever..
