When I was in a warrant was the most knowledgeable and capable soldier in his field or set of fields of expertise. And, as far as I'm concerned, that's the way it way it always should be. The soldier who can teach and mentor troops, who can ensure continuity of quality, and who can personally step in when first line troops are incapacitated. That's why I wanted to become a warrant and that's what being a warrant officer is all about!

I agree with you 100%. You should always strive to be a technical expert in your field. You should never stop attempting to gain more knowledge. You should always seek effiecent ways to influence and motivate your Soldiers, NCO's, peers and seniors to make sound decisions based off of facts and regulations. You should always strive to be value added and place the mission of your unit before any of your personal goals.

That will be interesting-Now you will see company grade officers initiating salutes to CW3-CW5 because normally would notice the scrambled eggs before you see the rank! As for hats and caps in genera,l I wish the Army had a uniform option with a garrison cap, much prefer over the beret or the service cap! I can understand why the Army is the only service that typically wears the combat uniform in public and office environments!

That brings me to another interesting thought, If senior warrants get field grade status, why not get roll them into becoming commissioned officers as what they did with Army Physician Assts. Pay is very close to O1 to O5 anyway. They could still keep the specialized career path. Roughly similar in concept to the Navy's Limited Duty Officer program (although they still have Warrants as well) Warrants are considered commissioned officers after W1 anyway. I know that the Warrant Officer corps is a long and proud tradition; however, since they are considered commissioned, are paid as commissioned officers, now get field grade status, lets make them commissioned. Just some interesting discussion material!

I thought i read somewhere that a W1 is now commissioned right off the bat; no more waiting the 2 years.

CW3 (Join to see) - As I am a new wobbly 1, I can confirm that I am NOT a commissioned officer until I reach CW2. Going warrant has been the best choice I could have made. I chose this to be an expert and adviser, not to compete as an RLO.

If a Warrant is commissioned, how then, does a Warrant need to be commissioned?

Just give the Warrants their Oak Leafs and be done with it.

I'm hoping soon to have to ask the same question: "Anyone need a Company Grade service cap?"

I think I will, just as soon as I put my old color belt (taekwondo) uniforms up there and see if they sell. (I'm a black belt now, just got promoted to 2nd degree...we wear different uniforms).

Guess I'm just to old. Nothing made me prouder than being a Warrant Officer. Period! Brown Shoulder Boards, Silver Buttons, and the distinctive insignia of a Warrant Officer created in 1921. A true specialist and professional. Getting commissioned was the first insult and being told I had to wear aviation branch insignia and color the second (which I did not do). We did not salute each other either. Do not get me wrong, my father flew B-24's, B-17's and B-29's during the second world war and gave me the aviation branch insignia he wore when when he swore me in as a WO1. Great honor but not my branch.
Sorry guys, your new hat does not impress me.

I hope that I don't piss anyone off but that looks like something that an African dictator would wear.

THAT looks SILLY! Something a bandsman in the Rose Bowl parade might wear. I KNOW! How about branch colored pom-poms on the top of the cover so you can be recognized at a distance and from above! And, of course, the pom-poms for Field Grade and Senior Field Grade Warrant Officers would have to be in silver or gold!

Am I the only one who thinks something ia very wrong here (hmmm, wouldn't be the first time I've been alone)?

Has anyone seen the new Air Force class-A's? Modeled somewhat after the Marine dress uniform, they present a serious, dignified look.

Oh, by the way, does anyone here remember what warrant officers were supposed to be and do? A hint: it has nothing to do with being cost-effective, not to say cheap, lieutenants.

I understand your thought on this, but since they Army decided to officially call CW3's and CW4's Field Grade Warrant Officers, I guess these changes will be coming as well.

Your AD correct? I am not reading this in DA Pam 670-1. Where is the hard print on this?

AR 600-20, table 1-1 changed making all CW3-5's Field Grade Warrant Officers and Senior Field Grade Warrant Officers for purposes of OER's, housing, uniforms, and for pulling duty purposes.

Okay I will bite here, neither AR 670-1 nor DA-Pam 670-1 do not clearly state WO's of CW3 and above will have to have this. It is in its basic writing very ambiguous to say the least. We could sum this up with Field Grade Officers being 0-4 and above. As it does not say Field Grade Officers and Field Grade Warrant Officers, and that IMHO is a huge difference. One could argue this is not the intent, as the wording can go in another direction. I for one, would not want to get into a "contest" with a field grade officer, and use Facebook as my point of reference. between the Pam and the two AR's it is as fuzzy as it gets IMHO.

Glad I retired before another round of uniform changes. Went through 3 or 4 different versions of Class A, demise of khakis, 3 generations of fatigues, 3 generations of BDUs, DCUs, ACUs and Dress Blues/ASUs.

CW4 Tim Claus - I have been retired for almost eight years, yet I dream about the Army almost every night. Usually in my dreams I am trying to explain why I am still wearing an out of date uniform!
