I agree with MSgt Quick for pointing out the numbers, and with your own assessment of your situation. Get the help! Get it quickly. If you seek the help, it will not go against you. If you are forced into it due to a problem, you will then have issues.

Good luck. Also, another good source for assistance is Military One Source. IT is on the web, and it is free. http://www.militaryonesource.com use it.

Trooper Su - Replace alcohol with non-alcohol over a period of time. You still drink but not alcohol. Depending on how much you are used to drinking and the other dependencies you may have (smoking, eating, sex, etc.), it may take some time or some more professional method. But, if you have the will power (think Basic Training), then you identify how much you drink now, if it is negatively impacting your life I (relationships, work, etc.), and your ultimate goal.

If your goal is to stop completely, that is tough. But set a long-term goal and then map out a daily, weekly, monthly set of milestones to reach your goal. It takes 21 days to lock in a new behavior/replace an old one. So, work towards that. Also, expect to fail and don't beat yourself up for failing. Just keep trying and know when to ask for help. Good luck.

My best response is to remove yourself from the situation that makes you drink and seek out others who have done the same. That is difficult for military because they are stuck where they are. I hope all gets better.

If you drink daily - and NEED to drink, you need to get into a program. The reason I say this is that I have seen too many people come into the hospital (for one reason or another) and we find out that they are heavy drinkers. Stopping suddenly CAN kill you. We would watch their heart rate and give them Ativan hourly to make sure that their heart rate didn't get too high. PLEASE go to an ER and ask for help - any hospital can help you!!!!!!! Don't do it alone!!!

I agree with you 100% (well maybe not about the go to ER part). It sounds like he will need longer detox from what an ER can provide. They can of course get him to a facility that can continue the detox process which from what previous post sounds like is warranted. The longest detox process I have been involved with was about two weeks with I guy who was taking antabuse and drinking rubbing alcohol. Unfortunately despite all of that he started drinking and died due to portal hypertension from severe liver enlargement. He was a really nice guy once the ETOH was cleared from his body.

SPC Ryan Su, please know that we are all pulling for you! I will pray for you daily! There are some great suggestions here that are available to you. We are available to you by a simple message. Seek Jesus and people you trust. The best support are the ones you can get down to the nitty gritty with in the details of your life. We love you; God loves you. Be encouraged! Victory starts here!

Stop buying booze. Stop going to places where booze is easily accessible. Modify you social life so that booze is no longer a part of it. And if you find that you can't, get help.

LTC Paul Labrador Sir, can you name a place where booze isn't easily accessible - besides maybe downrange? I've had a number of people in my family die from alcoholism, and I used to think the same as you. Then I started looking around - in just my 15 minute drive from post to home I pass probably 5-6 places that sell alcohol, including the PX. There's almost no town in the US where alcohol isn't available within a 5 minute drive.

there are many 12 step programs. You are not alone. It takes 21 days to form and break old habits. There are many like you out there.  Google "When and Where"  it will direct you to meetings in your area.

Hi Ryan, I'm using 1st name since I'm a vet and it just feels appropriate. I hope you do well with it brother, I finally went to alcohol rehab through the VA, twice actually. I know it can be a little tough while on Active Duty, but I'm proud of you :). You have such an amazing background life I remember reading, NYPD, and now Army. Really give 12 step program/AA at least a chance, they saved my life. Your in our prayers brother Ryan :). Shon. (Doc)

Things we do when we are young. You keep up with that and by the time you hit 35, you are going to have a large gut.
I know people who put away a lot of liquor on the weekends and a little less on the weekday. If you can handle it, you can handle it. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you can't.
