Well the fact that he retired also makes it hard to be considered, but even if he hadn't retired he wouldn't have been considered.

Mattis was forced to retire if I don't recall. But you are right, if he was still in, he wouldn't be considered. But I believe he would have spoken for all of the Marine Corps in what the below ranks really wanted.

I lived next door to GEN Dunford in 1999-2000 when he was LTC Dunford. Great man, hard working, deserves everything good that happens to him.
He has my vote.

Gen Dunford and his family is from the same place as mine (Quincy MA) and I've heard great things about him as a leader-- so on that end yes.
