I would find a local direct lender and interview them to determine they are competent with VA mortgages and you feel comfortable with them. I would contact USAA and get a quote from them and compare.
I am a direct lender in Florida and I have been a USAA member for 50 years. My interest rates normally are better and I know our service is better.

Hello Every One, I am Robbort Bassler From Ohio U.S.A, I quickly want to use this medium to shear a testimony on how God directed me to a Legit and real loan lender who have transformed my life from grass to grace, from being poor to a rich woman who can now boast of a healthy and wealthy life without stress or financial difficulties. After so many months of trying to get a loan on the Internet and was scammed the sum of $9,800 i became so desperate in getting a loan from a legit loan lender on-line who will not add to my pains, then i decided to contact a friend of mine who recently got a loan on-line, we discussed about the issue and to our conclusion she told me about a woman called Mrs Christina Rojas who is the C.E.O of Happiness Loan Firm So i applied for a loan sum of (750,000.00USD) with low interest rate of 3%, so the loan was approved easily without stress and all the preparations where made concerning the loan transfer and in less than two(2) days the loan was deposited into my bank so i want to advice everyone in need of a loan to quickly contact him via: Email: ( [login to see] ) he does not know am doing this i pray that God will bless him for the good thing he has done in my life.

My experience with a USAA VA loan was horrible. I was medically retired and changed careers. My wife and I have credit scores over 800, no debt and due to changing careers they wouldn't underwrite it. That put a really bad taste in my mouth with USAA. I felt like they weren't there when I needed them. The next 3 banks I delt with approved me on the spot and we picked the one with the best rates. We have slowly moved most of our banking and investments away from USAA and feel that it was a good decision. Shop around for the best rates and give a credit union a try. You will able to sit with a real person vs. navigating your way through USAA's call center. Good luck!

USAA does a good job, but remember they are not truly affiliated with the military or VA. I do a LOT of VA loans being in a strong military community. I compete against them daily, and they do great. Just keep an eye on the fees they are charging and/or the rate they are bumping up in order to cover the fees.

USA just did my second house. Super easy to work with. We've used them multiple times. From contract to close in 12 days. No BS.

If you are still on active duty where are you currently stationed? Because it makes a big difference when buyig a house it the house is in another state. Also if your trying to buy the house after you get out of the military you will have to have a job and be on that job at least a year before most lender will give you a loan. I agree with the advise of other who stated that you should shop around for the best rate. I would suggest Navy Federal Credit Union they have a good program so shop around. Also remember that you can now print your home loan certificate from ebenefit. Just set up an account it a great account to have because you can do alot there instead of waiting for stuff to be mailed.

Navy Fed can tend to have better rates than USAA, but will be equally as poor at getting the loan done. Bank accounts and auto loans is where they shine. You're best bet is to find a local mortgage company that spends 100% of their time working on mortgages and has an expertise in VA loans. Chances are that their company is in several states and they can perform at a high level for you even if buying out of state. I highly recommend avoiding banks, credit unions, and insurance companies for mortgages. Its like going to the foot doctor for a tooth ache...

USAA is a great company for many things, but mortgage origination isn't one of them. They have consistently offered me higher rates, higher fees and longer closings than when working with other companies. My first loan was through them and the process for you is very streamlined, however, I subsequently refinanced through another company and got a much better rate with half the points USAA quoted me.
Auto Insurance, all day long, any of their home products (aside from renters insurance), I would shop around.

USAA is a great insurance company, but mortgage loans are not their specialty. You're best bet is to find a local lender that specializes in VA loans. All lenders offer VA loans, but few are skilled at them. Better yet is to find a veteran that is a loan officer in your town.
Lastly, shopping just interest rates for a purchase loan is the kiss of death. There's a lot to a purchase loan such as time lines, closing deadlines, and your earnest deposit money on the line. Just shopping rates is fine for a refinance, but don't risk such a big ordeal on the count of saving a couple bucks. You get what you pay for....

No! I just went through hell trying to do a simple VA Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan though them. Complete nightmare. Ended up having to complain to the CEO's office twice. In the end they refunded all of my money and I withdrew my loan from them.

We refinanced our home to USAA and have had a great experience so far. I would highly recommend them.
