Guess I don't feel so bad about how bad the Navy Spells it out now either. My JMUC with Presidential Whatever Outline with Oak Leaf always seemed a bit Extreme too. If I understand right the JMUC with framed outline is for what I did in Fiery Vigil and the Oak Leaf is for what I did in Adak in the Cold War but still it confuses Me.

SFC Michael Krogmann - No worries. Your question raised interest in my brain so I wanted to know, as well.

MSG (Join to see) - It just looks awful, but after 24 years, I know that the Army doesn't always make sense!

SFC Michael Krogmann - At least the AFRM w/ M device doesn't look so bad. The other, yea the full size clusters don't look so hot.

SFC Michael Krogmann - But, I don't think the regs state you HAVE to wear them on the medals. But the other side to not wearing them would be having to answer questions as to why you only have one of each medal.

AR 670-1 says that full-size oak leaf clusters are worn on miniature medals. Does anyone know of any MILPER messages that fix this problem?

I always used miniature appurtenances because they sold them in the Clothing Sales, but never really saw it in the reg. (Shame on me, I thought always followed the reg).

So I dug real deep! I looked around and found this OLD reg..... US Code of Federal Regulation (CFR), from 1949 (see photo). Interestingly enough... the same verbiage is in the 2005 CFR. But CFR, Title 32, para 578 is not accessible in the current 2017 CFR.

This is a case where common sense overrules the regulation. Full size oak leaf clusters look bad on miniature medals which is why they make the in miniature sized.

Just came across this situation today. The current reg makes it look like there is only one size of device for each type of device no matter what you wear it on. With the exception of the even larger Oak Leaf Clusters for the full size medals. Where I work we have been selling the mini oak leaves and stars for years, but neither one is mentioned in the reg at all.

What makes this a bit astonishing is that the Air Force mandates three sizes of oak leaf clusters--one for suspension ribbons of full-size medals, another for service ribbons, and a miniature for mini-medals. From AFI36-2803: “Oak leaf clusters are issued in three sizes and two colors. The larger size is worn on the suspension ribbon of the medal, the middle size on the service ribbon bar, and the smaller size on the miniature medals and ribbons.”
