I agree with most of the new Reg's that need to go into effect.
-Tattoos: I think that tattoo's on the neck, face, and hands are unprofessional. If a Soldier wants to stay in they will get in removed. But with Soldiers with sleeve tattoo's and leg tattoo's,they just need to leave that alone for the time being, and focus on the Soldiers that bring alot of attention to themselves.
-Shaving: Now i enjoy not having to shave during leave and weekends. But my concern is if there going to hold these strict grooming standards for males will they do the same for females. Cant can have double standards.
-Now when these new regs come out they need to be enforce to the fullest T, and not to a certain group of people.

SPC Smith, you bring up a good question.  Why is there a different standard when it comes to tattoos for Commissioned Officers?  (I'll post in a new question)

I heard a rumor that the SMA started a DA-6 Army wide for SFC and Above to conduct facial inspections. For more details check the Pentagon's staff duty book.

Favorite portion definetely the changes in hair for the female soldiers, I like jessica rabbit but thats a movie star (cartoon) not exactly a professional look let alone one to be taken seriously in combat..

The sour taste comes from the tat restrictions, I understand the idea, at least I think I do. The face ones though, I agree. May be I like art and thats why it bothers me. Some tats are a last remembrance of a fallen comrade or even a family member of course there is more I just picked the reasoning behind 3 of mine.

I don't like the idea of 670-1 being punitive, and allowing people to get in trouble under UCMJ. I'm absolutely against the idea that because a SM has tattoos on their arms and/or legs they cannot Commission. I don't think enough thought was put into walking and using a phone. Nothing is unprofessional about walking and receiving information about what needs to be done for the day. I agree with no walking and eating. I see this as a tool to scare enough people out, and I think it will work great.

The way I see it, if it's that important, you can stop. I with you on the commission issue; it doesn't make sense that an NCO with years of experience who wants to commission can't because of his sleeve.

My question for you is why is no walking/eating good and no walking/cell bad?

Walking while  using a Cell phone, other elecrtonic devices etc. is implace because besides distracting the individual, with a phone in your hand texting or talking. Most are right handed and would have the device in their right hand, making it difficult to Salute. As silly as that sounds.

I think cellphone use while walking should be allowed. I find the saluting case difficult to support because standing still you'd have the same issue, so how does it change to matter? This is just older people who don't understand technology making rules about it.

SPC Smith while I agree with your tattoo thoughts, I completely disagree with you on the walking while on the phone, for two specific reasons. Before I get into those reasons I'll counter your statement that " This is just older people who don't understand technology making rules about it". This amounts more to "younger people" being technologically dependant, you cant do anything with out tweeting it or posting it, etc. I'm sure I had a cell phone before you were out of diapers so I think I understand the use of technology, but I don't need it to function. In addition you may have noticed but all the "older people" (you know, your 1SG, CSM, LTC, COL, etc) live on their Black Berry, heck, the military issues them. So in essance I'm saying your arguement doesnt hold water.

Now, down to my arguements. 1) It's a safety issue: Just like driving and texting, walking and texting or talking on the phone is dangerous. Most of the time people are oblivious to whats going on around them when they are on a cell phone. 2) Its an issue with customs and courtesy: I cant tell you how many times I've corrected a soldier for not saluting an officer that they just massed (when they werent on a phone) adding a phone, and the aforementioned obliviousness of those on phones then you miss saluting your Commander.

Just received a slide presentation of the changes.  The sideburns will remain the same being allowed to extend to the bottom ear opening.  There is no mention of Soldiers being required to shave at all times.  There is extensive coverage on female hairstyles and tattoos.  If you would like a copy, email [login to see]

I actually like all updates, it takes the guess work out of most issues we have with our Soldiers. I just hope it's not to late. Thanks to the SMA we might actually start looking like professionals again. We do great work now lets work on the outward appearance.

I do like it is more specific and detailed. Take in mind
that many females abuse of the hair style and as well the nail polish color. I
have seen females that her soft cap does not fit due the hair style.  With the males and the earrings, I have seen
many Seniors NCO’s while I was pulling duty in the gates with earring and then
they are the same in formation giving the speech of do and don’ts according to
the  AR 670-1.    We must present a professional appearance.  For the NCOS’s we have to keep in mind “No
one is more professional than I” Not only our nation have the eyes in us
also  the world.  We represent our country and we have to go by
the regulation.  Also take in mind the
Army is downsizing  and they are
looking  for targets and what better that
change the AR and see who does not comply with.

The tattoo policy is probably the best change. Soldiers, regardless of rank, were getting too out of control with the tattoos. I always refer back to the movie "Cadence". if Soldiers do not want to comply with the regulations, then send them to the stockade and kick them out. I guarantee you the RIF will go a lot smoother.

Totally agree brother Pazz. Also ensuring that everyone understands the processes and steps to take in order to rid the Army of Over weights, drug users and undisciplined Soldiers. back to the Basics and pass the knowledge on to the young prospects.

I dislike many of the new hair grooming standards for females!
I totally understand hair not touching the collar etc. but now females can't have "twist" "twisties" which is a huge deal for many females like myself who have Natural hair which can get rough to maintain many times, so having a style like twist extentions help us maintain a neat appearance. as long as its not unkempt and the hair stays in a bun and off our collar, I dont understand the deal. But such is life and I'll just Embrace the Suck and find something to do with my hair!! -_- probably end up cutting it all off!!!

Whyyyyyy are they against the twists?? I don't see anything unprofessional about that hairstyle as long as, like you said, it's kept neat.

It's just something else the army is worried about instead of important things like performance or functional, serviceable equipment.
