No portion of the bulk of the hair, as measured from the scalp, will exceed 2 inches (except a bun, which may extend a maximum of 3 inches from the scalp) and be no wider than the width of the head.

WIDTH OF THE HEAD?!?! OMG we are about to see some ginourmous buns.

When it comes to the female hair, I have had so many ignorant Drill Sergeants approach me in telling me my hair is not in complience with the new reg. however, it is, I have straight short hair ( not by choice I have a TBI and the length helps), but under the guidelines of "medium hair length" that is not beyond 1" from the back of the base of the skull to the front of the jawline, but since common sense is not issued, I have had to explain that my hair does not have to be 1" alll the way around, I would look like a chia pet. So as though I am thrilled that as a whole Army we can go back to the basics, I joined in '96, that I will not be the only one correcting uniforms and apperance, the new generation post 9/11 should read the reg and check before they correct, just sayin.

I think that the Electronic cigarette is dumb. I use a Ecig because i dont want to smoke a real one. Now that i quit i have to go to a smoking area to "vape" on my ecig. I shouldnt have quit then.

1SG,

Outside the building, just not in the smoking area. I cannot stand the smell of smoke anymore. Everyone smells like and ashtray lol

Why did they have to separate it out from one AR to a new AR and a DA Pam?  Makes no sense to me.  Just another extra pub to keep on hand.

The regulation takes too long to make changes too. The DA-PAM can be changed with less work (red tape).

OK Sir, that part I get and that does make sense.  Thank God for computers though.  When I first got in we needed just a few regs on hand, now any leader from general to team leader needs an entire library. :-)

At least those who have tattoos that are not in compliance will be given a chance to get rid of it instead of just getting the boot. Pretty sure that I will have to have my wife's initials on my ring finger removed.

You should be able to have it documented and thus grandfathered.

SFC Hoskins,

Thank you for the response. I believe that may be the case, but I would have to research more into previous allowed tattoo location. It's suprisingly hard to find the old 670-1 right now

Disregard. I found it on this great resource called ADP. My google skills are slacking. Below is the tattoo policy from the old AR 670-1

e.

Tattoo policy

(1) Tattoos or brands anywhere on the head, face, and neck above the class A uniform collar are prohibited.

(2) Tattoos or brands that are extremist, indecent, sexist, or racist are prohibited, regardless of location on the body,

as they are prejudicial to good order and discipline within units.

(a)

Extremist tattoos or brands are those affiliated with, depicting, or symbolizing extremist philosophies, organizations,

or activities. Extremist philosophies, organizations, and activities are those which advocate racial, gender or

ethnic hatred or intolerance; advocate, create, or engage in illegal discrimination based on race, color, gender, ethnicity,

religion, or national origin; or advocate violence or other unlawful means of depriving individual rights under the U.S.

Constitution, Federal, or State law (see para 4–12, AR 600–20).

(b)

Indecent tattoos or brands are those that are grossly offensive to modesty, decency, or propriety; shock the moral

sense because of their vulgar, filthy, or disgusting nature or tendency to incite lustful thought; or tend reasonably to

corrupt morals or incite libidinous thoughts.

(c)

Sexist tattoos or brands are those that advocate a philosophy that degrades or demeans a person based on gender,

but that may not meet the same definition of “indecent.”

(d)

Racist tattoos or brands are those that advocate a philosophy that degrades or demeans a person based on race,

ethnicity, or national origin.

Does any one actually have the 31 Mar 2014 version? If you go to APD and click on the PDF you still get the old RAR.

If it is not available on the official publishing directory, then it isn't officially published.

My 2 cents.

So I have looked throughout it, and do not see clean shaven while off duty. If I am wrong please correct me.

Chapter 3, section 1, sub-paragraph a. states: " Soldiers will present a professional image at all times and will continue to set the example in military presence,
both on and off duty. Pride in appearance includes Soldiers’ physical fitness and adherence to acceptable weight
standards in accordance with AR 600–9."

Chapter 3, Section 9, sub-paragraph b. states: "When on duty in civilian clothes or off duty and outside of their personal dwelling, Army personnel will present a
professional image that does not detract from the profession, unless specifically exempted by the commander for
specific mission requirements."

This means that your Commander (such as your Division Commander) may dictate that you must be clean shaven off duty to be in compliance with this. As far as I'm aware, this is already in the works here at 4th ID, but I haven't seen any policy letters on the matter yet.

Stay tuned and stay aware of any changes your post or unit my release.

the order of that wording SGT Mullet would mean to me that i need to be shaved in uniform and in civilian clothes on duty (even when i'm in uniform at or outside my dwelling) But yes, fairly general statements which could mean what you say.

None of this pertains to me directly because I am retired Army and not in a capacity to lead a military organization with military leadership, under USC Title 10, yet I have a son in the Marines, and we do have those chats.

Lessons learned from the 70s, 80s and 90s, I see a trend of new rules coming down the pike with moderate dissent. A further risk analysis demonstrates that rank is the biggest constraint for both officer channels and NCO chain.

I like this thread because a conversation was started and it continues. Silence is another constraint and it builds dissent and destroys trust in ourselves and others in leadership positions.

This is where professional development is needed.

Good leaders in times of change such as these are today's change agents, both in personal and professional leadership styles. Which ever style a leader develops is his or her legacy to a military with a fine tradition.

I do not want to observe our fine military reverting back to a post-Vietnam era of organizational behavior.

Keep the conversation going. Please.
