SCPO Davis, thanks for sharing this article. I had to read through it twice. The first time I read it I got the wrong impression of the author (and I'll leave it at that) and didn't realize his intent until the end. On the second read, understanding his intent, it was much more poignant than bitter. He makes many good points that should be given some deep consideration and leaves me wondering just how much of the 'gratitude' our service members have received is actually an attempt to atone guilt.

I am NOT a hero. I would say any Soldier with a decoration for valor (including Soldiers Medal) is a hero.

LTC (Join to see) I'd say yes and no on that one. Generally, sir, I would agree but at the same time I'm sure there are plenty of Soldiers out there who have accomplished similar or even greater things without being seen or recognized for it....and there is occasionally a mis-used medal as well. Case in point: After the first Gulf war, my Company Commander called me aside and told me that the Battalion was awarding Arcoms to E-5 and below, and Bronze stars to E-6 and above, and that I was to be receiving a Bronze Star because I was in an E-6 position. In hindsight, maybe I should have kept my mouth shut, but I said "Sir, that's a Valor award, not a rank award. I'll pass."

I understand you point. But the Bronze Star can be awarded for meritorious service or valor. The difference is the V device. Awards should not be awarded based on rank. Yes I understand it happens.

I have unfortunately seen the V device given for absolute ridiculousness, (not paying attention while driving in an ambush, and running off the road and breaking your thumb) while others whom have truly acted with valor have had their medals "demoted" because the individual did not lack the rank to achieve said medal. Yes that really was the excuse used when an E3 in my unit took up the 50 Cal to return fire and taking command of the vehicle on an ambush after his squad leader froze and fell to the floor of the APC.

This is a sore subject I have found with veterans and active duty alike. It is my opinion that taking an oath and putting on the uniform does not make you a Hero. No more than choosing to be a Police Officer, or a firefighter.
What it does do, just like those other professions, is have a greater likely hood of putting you in a position to act heroically.
There ARE heroes in the military. We are not all heroes. Sorry if you disagree, but it is my opinion to think otherwise is truly delusional, and disrespectful to those heroes who are among us, and who have come before us.
