So I met this guy the other day that is a gym buddy of our kids (20 and 17 year old). Obviously I don't know the entire story but he is 100% disabled for hearing and his back. The moment I met him I wanted to call bullshit. He walked in our home looking like a cartoon superhero and started talking about his workout. He does parkour, and extreme weight lifting. And has since he was in and now that he is out. That immediately raise a flag of bullshit beyond him explaining to us his philosophy on working out and people. He also started to go into his time as a leader in the Air Force...he got out as a E4. I quickly identified him as "that guy". So anyways.

I live in constant pain from protruding disc in my neck. It is intensified by any variety of things but mostly just doing shit. I have days where I literally just want to lay in bed with my percocet in hand and try and numb myself to feel a little normal again and other where it just feels like some one is punching me over and over. I am 50% broken. I don't claim to be more or less broken than I am and don't really care that much about how broken I am I just avoid doing stuff that makes it a percocet day.

So my questions are this;
People that may or may not be using the system are they really hurting the system?
Do you care if people fake disability to get more from a system?
How would you handle your kid around this guy who you know is a freaking idiot?

If he is 100 percent for hearing and back then he is using the system and if they found out they would take his money. His back alone would hinder hom from working out like he does if he is described as you said. But with out knowing the full history can't really say. But I hate when people use the system because either does hurt those that need it. Say a doc got used and he found out. He will now be give way more scrutiny to a guy who has the same problem and may even lower his rating or deni him. Even if he deserves the rating.

I'm leery of the SuperVets that are running around. But remember this; while we have vets that are playing the "game" the "game" (VA) has been in business of playing vets for 60 years. And they've never had to make a fourth quarter come back drive like millions of vets have had to do, just to end up running the ball when they should've passed (VA has ALL of the Superbowl rings). I feel for those denied their proper benefits and I sincerely hope they get them in short order, but I think it's long time that we vets get Rodgers in the game to thrown that needed fourth and goal touchdown against the "patriotic" VA defense. VA's defense (buracary) is hurting the system. Their personal sense of judge, jury, and executioner, is hurting the system, and the very system they use on us is killing us slowly while permitting them to continue the claims backlog.

SSG Richard Reilly - Ha! #HTTR forever. But Rodgers is the best current QB in my opinion.

I served and a airborne unit for 10 years and hurt my back, neck and knees pretty bad and only receive 70 percent and some day's I can't even get out of bed on my own, however my wife was never in the Field or deployed. She is rated at 100% for her knees and headaches. I had to have a knee replacement and she runs and go to the gym. she knew how to scam the system. And every time I look at her I have less and less respect for her and others like her

I have seen a few too. They claim all sorts of disabilities, but are on no meds and live life as a happy clam. I wonder how they managed to sell their issues to some doc?

I'm surprised they got a doctor to listen to what they said in the first place. Usually I get "here is some motrin, go back to work", no matter what the problem is. Broken hand? Motrin and a cast. Flu? Diareaha? Vomitting all over the place? Have some Motrin (maybe 24 hour quarters if your lucky)

SSgt (Join to see) - Drink water!

What's wrong? Your feet are bleeding? Good, that means they are working. Have you drank enough water?

What was that? The bone is pertruding the skin? Drink water. DON'T rub dirt on it.

You knee is broken? Here's icy hot, motrin, mold skin... and make sure you drink water.

SSG Richard Reilly I'm on 100% because of issues related to neck trauma. So I can really empathize with you.

If you think this guy is gaming the system, and know who he is, you should call the VA IG and report it...

SN Greg Wright Although Gulf War Syndrome is commonly associated with service members who have deployed to the Gulf. The truth is no one knows what causes it. There's a variety of theories about contaminated soil on military bases, contaminated drinking water, vaccines, environmental exposures etc. It could be any or it could be a combination. The name Gulf War syndrome is just as inaccurate as the name of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. There's a reason it's referred to as 'Medically Unexplained'. The criteria is so broad, I wouldn't be surprised if lyme disease and many autoimmune disorders get this categorization before properly diagnosed.

If you are already at 80% and cannot engage in gainful employment you can probably get bumped up to 100%.

I think there are some former service members out there that take advantage of the system. I remember working as a federal contractor and working with some folks who were surprised that I didn't have disability coming in. If i made it through my time alright I'm certainly happy that I did. It bothers me that some will fake things or exploit the system in place. For example if I claim this it can not be verified and I'm guaranteed to get x...y...z compensation. For those who have service connected things use what's out there for you. For those who are making things up. I'd say knock it off.

You are right, but when one makes such statements on RP, be prepared for incoming. Many believe everyone deserves disability.

I think those types of assholes absolutely do negatively affect truly disabled veterans. I think "back pain" and PTSD are the most-faked and most-easily faked disabilities, because it's nearly impossible to prove a negative to either one. There's no doubt in my mind there are a lot of fakers who are taking away the time and resources from the VA which should be used for those who truly need them. The sort of person who does that is the worst of the worst.
