Are retired Army personnel authorized to wear the blue mess uniform for formal military events where dinner dress or tuxedos are requested?

AR 670-1 authorizes occasions for wear of the Army uniform by retired personnel. DA PAM 670-1 provides further information. Neither prohibit retirees from wearing the mess uniform or mention a requirement to wear only the ASU. The retiree handbook summarizes both and mentions service and dress uniforms, but not the mess uniform.

I my humble opinion if you are retired wear what you want even if not addressed in AR 670-1. What are "they" going to do, make you join the ARMY?

Military retirees can still be court-martialed, Supreme Court affirms
The decision leaves the possibility open for retirees implicated in high-profile scandals to face punishment, to include sailors involved in the Navy’s “Fat Leonard” scandal and retired Gen. David Petraeus’ affair with his biographer.

I asked the CSM here and he told me retires are allowed to wear the uniform but must be in reg's

SFC Michael Hasbun - If you are going to wear it, wear it well. I think the only objection would be if you looked like a soup sandwich in the uniform, or a stuffed turkey.

CPT (Join to see) If it is not mentioned and not specifically prohibited, then I would think you could wear it, based on the regulation for appropriate times to wear the mess uniform. Army retirees have a handbook. I do not ever recall receiving one when I retired from the Navy.
