I'm currently a Cyber Network Defender stationed in Alaska. Any information will help. Specifically, I'm looking for guidance on building a strong packet, and topics to familiarize myself with (other than the usual answer of scripting languages). I'm aware that the MOS is fairly new, so it's likely most selectees haven't made it to the specialized study course yet.

SSG Deberry, email me. The first 170As are currently here, I can fill you in and put in contact with a SME.

Sir I am an E 6 in the air force considering this transition. What are the locations authorized for this MOS? I just want to have an idea of where I could be stationed.

Know the protocols, CW2 (Join to see) (and I'm not talking just TCP and UDP). Understand the relationship between client and server that exists FOR EACH application, not just client-server relationships in general. Last, and certainly not least, get yourself a copy of Practical Unix and Internet Security by Garfinkel and Spafford. Yes, you can find most of the content in this book on the 'net. But you won't find as much in one place as you do here. Best wishes; if I may be of assistance to you, do not hesitate to ask.

The WO Recruiting website has all the prerequisites to apply. I would suggest to get with a Sr. Signal Warrant in AK since I am sure there are no 170As there. Also on the website is proponent POC, CW4 Koscinch, call him to find out more information. Below are the basic prerequisites. You need to ensure you meet all of these. There are also Preferred Prerequisites, you need to hit as many of those as possible to be competitive.

• Be at least a SGT (E5) or above.
• Must have successfully completed Advance Leadership Course (ALC) Phase 1 or SSD-2.
• Currently hold an adjudicated TS/SCI security clearance.
• Hold a current IAT / IAM Level 2 certification (Security+, etc)
• TABE - Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), complete battery, level A 9/10. Complete test (not survey) with all categories. Scores required are Reading, Total Math, and Language at the 12th grade level (12.9+). Applicants with an AA/S, BA/S or Masters degree meet this requirement and do not require the TABE.
• Documented practical experience in Cyberspace Operations in a Cyber Mission Force work role, or equivalent civilian or educational experience. ◾Practical experience may be documented through NCO evaluation reports and award citations. In some instances practical experience acquired from civilian employment may be acceptable provided the experience can be documented by employee evaluations or performance appraisals and determined to be equivalent to military experience.
• A minimum of 36 months of rated time documented in NCOERs. ◾This is the minimum prerequisite; all NCOERs must be submitted for consideration.
• Applicant’s three most recent NCOERs must reflect outstanding duty performance ratings.
• Have a written endorsement letter (LOR) from an interview with a Senior Cyber Operations Technician (CW3-CW5). In the absence of an available Senior Cyber Operations Technician the Cyber proponent will accept a senior 255S, 255Z or 352N/S SWO LOR (CW3-CW5). 255S, 255Z or 352N/S SWO's must only evaluate the applicant based on their skill set to become a 170A (not for 255A/N). Please direct any questions on this topic to the Cyber Proponent POC below.
• A minimum of six semester hours of College Composition (not composition modular or developmental English courses) from an accredited academic institution. Speech and public speaking courses are not considered as meeting this requirement even if administered by the English department of an institution. Successful completion of the CLEP College Composition examination or an Associate’s degree or higher (when the preponderance of college credit is from college instruction vice credited experience) are the only acceptable alternatives.

I imagine they get stationed the same places their enlisted counterparts (17C) do. Right now, only places I've heard of them going is Fort Gordon, Fort Meade, Hawaii, and one of the San Antonio bases. Not sure if it was Sam Houston or one of the Air Force bases on that last one.
